Today is International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Today we introduce a couple of our team members who bring their scientific background and technical skills to our work.

Natalie Poitras – Fisheries Technician
“What I love most about my job is the variety – one day I’m crunching data, and the next I’m out on a boat helping service a Tagged Shark Listening Station. It’s the dream job mix of office work and field action.
I’ve had the chance to catch up with some of our contractors and help tag and release sharks. Last year, I had the incredible experience of seeing the Shark Program in action – seeing a smooth hammerhead and a tiger shark up close was a highlight.
I’m excited to get back out there in the future and see even more sharks.”

Today is International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Today we introduce a couple of our team who bring their scientific background and technical skills to our work.

Alyssa Kanyasi – Fisheries Technician
“I’ve worked in the Shark Program for a decade and watched this program grow and evolve. I’m so proud of the changes we’ve made. Every shark I tag still fills me with the same excitement as the first one—there’s always that sense of awe about these incredible animals. I love my job and working in such a passionate and innovative team. It’s truly inspiring to see people’s interest in sharks and learning more. Can’t wait to see where we go next!”

Alexandra ‘PJ’ Ikpe is one of our dedicated PhD candidates involved in the NSW Shark Management Program.

PJ’s research is looking at tiger shark broad and fine-scale movement and diet. Her aims are to further identify movement trends or residency patterns for tiger sharks using satellite tags and unravel fine-scale behaviours using biologging tags.

Biologging tags are animal-borne devices that are built with accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer loggers (collectively known as inertial measurement units) that gather data reflective of physiological and space use movement. By analysing the three loggers, we are able to determine how the animal is moving throughout the water column, and hopefully link this to specific behaviours.

Her diet analyses will provide additional data to inform potential drivers of movement and energy requirements.

Key questions of PJ’s research are:

🦈 Where do adult males travel?

🦈 What behavioural interactions occur along our coastlines?

🦈 Are tiger sharks true generalist predators?

This research will help us better understand tiger shark movement important for management and conservation of this charismatic species.

Holiday fun… is finding a shark PSAT tag on Back Beach, Evans Head! Thank you!

These tags “pop off” the shark after a pre-defined period of time, allowing our scientists to get lots of valuable information like where the shark travelled, how deep it was diving and the water temperatures it experienced. By finding the tag and returning it, you are contributing to our shark scientific research.

Volvo Ocean Lovers Festival (Bondi) was an inspiring and very successful event.
Dr Amy Smoothey shared her shark knowledge and experiences with hundreds of children for the Sea Science Student Expo (years 9-12) and Scientists of the Big Blue (years 3-6).
Shark education is an important step in ensuring future generations respect and protect these important marine animals. 🦈

When storms roll in, our SMART drumline contractors retrieve our SMART drumlines.

SMART drumlines are set daily, up to 1 hour after sunrise – weather conditions permitting - and retrieved every afternoon.

During times of rough seas or incoming storms, the SMART drumlines are not deployed – or they are retrieved earlier in the day if the weather takes a turn for the worse.

We do this so:-
🔹 Survival rates of hooked animals are maximised
🔹 Equipment does not move in storms or large seas
🔹 Contractors and animals are not at risk working in unsafe conditions.

Also, remember to be SharkSmart ...
🦈 Do not swim or surf after heavy rainfall, flooding.
🦈 Do not swim in murky, dirty water, or waters with known effluents or sewage.
🦈 Avoid swimming in canals and swimming or surfing in river/harbour mouths
