Firefighter spotlight - your chance to get to know us.

Hi, I’m Kim, and I’ve been an on-call firefighter with Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) for just over a year.

I joined because I wanted to do something I could be proud of, to learn new skills, gain new qualifications, and be part of a great team that steps up in times of need.

Outside of FRNSW, I work as a Dementia Support Specialist and Registered Nurse. Balancing work, family life, and being on-call has been surprisingly manageable. I’ve got a really supportive family and workplace who’ve encouraged me every step of the way.

Since joining, I’ve completed a range of training courses, earned my truck licence, met some incredible people, responded to all kinds of call-outs, and grown so much as a person.

Being a first responder is incredibly rewarding. If you’ve ever thought about joining but weren’t sure how it would fit into your life, come have a chat. You never know – it might be the perfect fit

Firefighter spotlight - your chance to get to know us.

Jon Hull RFF
I've been with FRNSW for almost 5 years.
I joined up on the back of the Black Summer fires in 2020, I was disappointed that I was unable to provide help in fighting the fires which left me feeling useless and vulnerable- I didn't like that much. I have been involved with other rescue organisations in both a voluntary and paid capacity so was pretty aware of what I could offer.
Outside of FRNSW I am an Assistant Principal for the Dept of Education, NSW.
Balancing my family, work and on-call commitments comes at a cost especially for big jobs or late at night, at times I am simply Unavailable as I am not able to leave my regular work or have family commitments for one of my 3 kids. Fortunately, we have a crew at 398-Narooma that looks out for each other and provides wrap around support when needed. We have some crew that work nights and are unavailable, and others that are not available during the day. Our Availabilty roster assists with the balancing act. At the end of the day when "the bells" go off we can either get on the truck or we can't. We maintain a guaranteed service provision meaning that FRNSW will ALWAYS turn up.
The training that we receive is first class, from the focussed training provided upon initial employment and the ongoing training we do throughout the year. Our station works on a mentor system, new recruits are paired up with more knowledgeable Firefighters and shown the ropes. We continue to train twice a month to maintain general skill level and for specific skills like Road Crash Rescue or Pump operator we are instructed by experts in that field. I feel confident in the skills that I have learned and so far have been able to apply them in situations that would be considered high pressure.
What I enjoy about being a firefighter at 398 is the comradery that working in extreme and harsh environments provides, I have formed some lifelong friendships as a result of shared experiences. You have to trust the team that you work with as in a firefighting or rescue situation your life and others may depend on that trust. This provides a unique working relationship between members of 398.
To be a good fit for FRNSW and specifically 398 you have to be open to receiving new skills and ways to approach tasks in high pressure situations, you have to be able to trust each other and get on with the job despite what is going on around you at the time. To be honest it is definitely exciting at times, but also requires focus and restraint to ensure that the approach taken is the right one.
If you are curious about joining, then come have a look around, chat to a firey and get the low down.

Firefighter spotlight- your chance to get to know us.

Hi, Troy here.

I’ve been with F+R Naroona for a little over six years. I got involved with the brigade because it seemed like a cool thing to be a part of and a great way to do something helpful within my local community.

Outside of F+R, I try to go to work most days with my gardening and landscaping business. But having to drive past all the beaches can sometimes be a bit distracting.

I think the initial training, ongoing training, and qualifications you receive are world-class.

For anyone thinking about joining up, I would say—it will change your life. It requires a pretty decent dose of commitment, and daytime availability is a must. But having said that, there is nothing quite like the sound of the pager at 02:37 in the morning. One thing I love is how people from different lifestyles, backgrounds, jobs, hobbies, and interests, when they get on the truck, we all switch on, give 100%, and work together for the best possible outcome at any incident we attend. Quite often, we’re running into danger while others are running from it.

The rewards are there with the work we do. Just quietly, it makes me proud of myself and of all the crew at 398.

So if you’re thinking about it—just do it, I say! All the crew are totally approachable and more than happy to answer any questions and help with anything. So act now.

Firefighter spotlight - your chance to get to know us.

Hi, my name is Will. I am a retained firefighter with Fire and Rescue NSW based in Narooma. I've been with FRNSW for just over a year, and joining has been one of the best things I've done since finishing high school. I joined FRNSW because I've always found myself helping others throughout my life. Fire and Rescue gives me the chance to help more people than ever while serving the community I live in.

Outside of FRNSW, I work as a bartender/bus driver at the local services club. A key aspect of being on-call is availability—working at the club allows me to be available from early morning until I start my evening shift. With some planning ahead, everything balances out well.

FRNSW takes training seriously. You're sent to some of the best training facilities in the state and prepared for any situation, with support every step of the way. While some people think FRNSW only deals with fires, it's much more than that. Our job is to keep the public safe and protect the irreplaceable.

The best parts of this job are the connections you make with your colleagues and the community, the experiences and skills you gain along the way, and how much you can help your community. If any of these aspects appeal to you, this job might be a perfect fit.

If you have any questions, you can message the page, and if you think you're up for it, you can register your interest below.
