Ever had one of those "What should I be doing with my child?" moments? You might already have the answer at home.

Earlier this year, every Goodstart family received a What & When for Families guide for each child. If it's been tucked away in a drawer since then, now might be the perfect time to pull it back out.

The guide is packed with simple, play-based activities that support your child's learning and development at home. Best of all, it's written in your child's voice, with ideas tailored to their age and developmental stage.

From singing songs with babies and playing peek-a-boo, to "I Spy" games, storytelling and treasure hunts with older children, the activities are designed to fit naturally into everyday moments you already share together.

We know learning doesn't only happen in the classroom. Those small moments at home can help build big communication, language and literacy skills.

Take another look through your What & When for Families guide to explore age-appropriate activities and learning ideas you can try together.

💛 Sometimes the best learning resource is the one you already have at home.

🐍🦉🦎🐊 Wildlife Adventures at Our Centre! 🐊🦎🦉🐍

Last Wednesday, our children enjoyed a very special visit from Wildlife Unleashed!

The children had the opportunity to experience and explore some amazing native Australian wildlife in a safe and hands-on environment. They met snakes, lizards, an owl, and even a baby crocodile! Throughout the session, the children learned interesting facts about these incredible animals and discovered the importance of wildlife conservation and caring for our natural world.

It was wonderful to see the excitement, curiosity, and confidence the children displayed as they interacted with the animals.

Experiences like these help foster a love of nature, encourage inquiry, and create lasting memories for our children. Thank you, Wildlife Unleashed, for such an engaging and educational experience! 💚

🌿🍃 Growing our Bush Kindy vision 🍃🌿

On Saturday, our passionate team of educators spent the day learning alongside the incredible team at Wildlings Forest School in Burnside.
Wildlings Forest School is an outdoor learning community that embraces child-led, nature-based education. Their philosophy is centred around giving children the time, space and freedom to explore, take supported risks, solve problems, build resilience and develop a genuine connection with the natural world.

Throughout the day, our educators immersed themselves in hands-on experiences that inspired us to see nature as the classroom. We explored loose parts play, built shelters using natural materials, created transient nature art, engaged in storytelling, and discovered countless ways to spark curiosity and imagination through the environment around us.
These experiences reminded us that some of the richest learning happens when children are given the opportunity to slow down, wonder, create and explore.

Bush Kindy offers children so many benefits, including:
🌱 Building confidence and resilience.
🪵 Developing problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
🍂 Encouraging creativity and imagination.
🦋 Supporting physical wellbeing through active outdoor play.
🌏 Fostering a deep respect and connection with nature.
🤝 Strengthening teamwork, communication and independence.

As a team at Goodstart Nambour City View Terrace, we are excited to bring this learning back to our service as we continue to grow and bring our Bush Kindy vision to life. We can't wait to share this journey with our children and families and watch our little explorers thrive in the great outdoors.

The research is clear 📚 reading aloud is one of the most powerful things we can do for our children.

When we read with a child, we’re doing far more than sharing a story. We’re building the foundations for language, confidence, curiosity and a lifelong love of learning.

Decades of research shows that children who are read to regularly:

💛 Build stronger language skills
Hearing rich varied language in books exposes children to far more words than everyday conversation alone. This growing vocabulary helps them understand, communicate and make sense of the world.

💛 Develop early literacy skills long before they learn to read
Through stories, children learn how books work – that print carries meaning, that pages turn left to right, and that stories have a beginning, middle and end. These early understandings make learning to read feel familiar and exciting.

💛 Strengthen phonological awareness
Rhymes, rhythms and playful sounds help children hear the building blocks of language.

💛 Grow their comprehension and thinking skills
Talking together about a story, predicting what might happen, wondering how a character feels, and connecting events to real life helps children develop memory, problem-solving, and higher-order thinking.

💛 Experience connection, comfort and joy
Shared reading fosters calmness, closeness, and moments of joint attention. These warm interactions support a child's sense of security and belonging.

Most importantly, children who experience positive, engaging reading moments from a young age are more likely to develop a genuine love of books - something that matters even more than early literacy skills alone.

Reading is simple, joyful, and sets children up for success in school and life.

You may have noticed some of our educators wearing bright pink shirts around the centre recently 💗

These shirts represent more than just a uniform. They proudly feature the Goodstart logo alongside Goodstart’s Stretch Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) artwork, “The Heart of Reconciliation,” created by David Williams of Gilimbaa.
The artwork tells an important story — one that reflects who we are and what we stand for. It symbolises that children are at the heart of everything we do, and highlights our commitment to inclusion, respect, and reconciliation.

At Goodstart, we believe every child should feel seen, valued, and connected. Our hope is that all children who walk through our doors will leave with reconciliation in their hearts 🧡💛🖤

If you see our team wearing pink, it’s a proud reminder of our shared commitment to building a more inclusive future for everyone.
