This Friday, 6 June 2025, the UNE Law School invites you to the 𝘔𝘺𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘊𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘬 25𝘵𝘩 𝘈𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘚𝘺𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘶𝘮: 𝘛𝘳𝘶𝘵𝘩-𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘓𝘰𝘳𝘦, 𝘓𝘢𝘸 & 𝘎𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 at the Oorala Aboriginal Centre UNE. As the closest law school to the Myall Creek Massacre site, we hold a unique responsibility to engage with this critical chapter of Australian history and its enduring impact on truth-telling and reconciliation.
The symposium marks 25 years of memorial-making at Myall Creek, commemorating the 28 Wirrayaraay people who were brutally massacred in 1838. This pivotal event in colonial legal history was the first time perpetrators of such atrocities were tried and convicted, setting a precedent for justice amidst the violence of the Frontier Wars.
The day’s program features powerful discussions on the role of law, Lore, and governance in advancing truth-telling and reconciliation. Key speakers include Judge Peter Johnstone, Thomas Mayo, and Auntie Sue Blacklock, alongside First Nations scholars and community leaders. These conversations will explore the unfinished business of Australia’s shared history and the path toward a more equitable future.
This symposium is not just an academic event – it is a call to action. By attending, you contribute to the ongoing dialogue about justice, healing, and reconciliation. Lunch is provided, but registration is essential.
