Celebrating Margaret Olley!

‘I could not paint in an ordered studio. I have to have lots of things around me that suggest painting.’

Born on this day in 1923, Margaret Hannah Olley AC remains one of Australia’s most important painters of still life and interiors. Here at the Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre, we have the honour of caring for the re-creation of her incredible home studio, which comprises the old Hat Factory and her beloved Yellow Room.

‘Interior III’ 1970 by Margaret Olley is a beautiful new addition to the Tweed Regional Gallery collection. This important, early interior by Olley was painted in 1970 at the family home of Farndon, Hill End (now West End), Brisbane.

Now on display 'Baabinje’s Backyard' is an exhibition of artworks by Bronwyn Bancroft and words by Ella Noah Bancroft 🌸🦋🐝

This exhibition features the original artworks for Baabinje’s Backyard, a beautiful picture book for children illustrated by Bronwyn Bancroft and written by Ella Noah Bancroft, about a grandmother’s love for her garden, her Country and her family.

"My Baabinje always had dirt under her fingernails.

She would take me out to the backyard and say, ‘Sit, Marli. Observe and connect with the day." ☀️

From two brilliant Bundjalung women – acclaimed mother-daughter pair Bronwyn Bancroft and Ella Noah Bancroft – Baabinje’s Backyard showcases the distinctive work of Dr. Bronwyn Bancroft AM on the occasion of her 50th children’s book and celebrates her tremendous contribution to Australian and Aboriginal children’s literature ❤️📚

Baabinje’s Backyard is published by Hardie Grant Children’s Publishing. Copies available for sale in the Gallery Shop.

In one of the Gallery's latest exhibitions, 'Indelible: The Poetry of Decay' we are invited into a gentle space of interpretation, contemplation and actionable reflection on the ‘ruins’ of our time.

This exhibition explores decay not just as a symbol of endings, but also as a lens through which artists examine life, mortality, and the cyclical nature of existence. The works speak of tragedies, the ongoing effects of colonisation, environmental degradation, the hauntingly beautiful, and the perpetual nature of life and death🥀

Includes works by Kirsten Coelho, Michael Cook (Bidjara), Dan Elborne, Sarah Rayner, Dylan Sarra (Taribelang/Gooreng Gooreng), and Henri van Noordenburg.

A Tweed Regional Gallery initiative. Exhibition on display until 16 August 2026.

Kirsten Coelho is represented by Sullivan + Strumpf, Sydney, Melbourne, Singapore and Philip Bacon Galleries, Brisbane.
Michael Cook is represented by Jan Murphy Gallery, Brisbane.
Dan Elborne is proudly independent.
Sarah Rayner is represented by Gallery Sally Dan-Cuthbert, Sydney.
Dylan Sarra is represented by Mitchell Fine Art, Brisbane.
Henri van Noordenburg is represented by Gallerie Kunstkomplex, Wuppertal Germany.
