🐍 Snake season is now here! As the weather warms up, you're more likely to see members of the local hiss-terhood in bushland, reserves, long grass, near water sources and occasionally around homes and sheds.

To reduce risk:
βœ… Keep grass and vegetation trimmed
βœ… Remove piles of debris, timber and rubbish where snakes may shelter
βœ… Wear enclosed footwear and long pants when walking in natural areas
βœ… Stay alert when stepping over logs, rocks or long grass.

If you see a snake:
❌ Do not approach, touch, catch or try to kill it
βœ… Stay calm, keep your distance and keep others away
βœ… Contact a licensed snake catcher if removal is required.

⚠️ Snakes generally avoid people and most bites occur when someone attempts to handle or kill a snake.

SAVE THE DATE πŸ“Pin your place in repair history.

The Great Global Mend is coming to SJ Community Resource Centre on Saturday 7 November 2026, and we want our local community there for it.

This is Australia's biggest simultaneous repair event, thousands of people across the country, all mending something at the exact same moment. A button here, a hem there, a favourite jacket finally getting the zip it deserves. Save the date, start digging out anything at home that needs a little love, and get ready to be part of a community event that's about connection, sustainability and giving items a second life

🦘 A helping hand for local wildlife

Our Rangers recently rescued a young kangaroo and helped get into safe hands at Darling Range Wildlife Shelter WA.

A big thank you to the team for the work they do caring for injured and orphaned native animals. We're proud to have supported the shelter through previous Shire grants and to see the positive impact they're making for local wildlife.

Our Rangers are often called out to assist injured wildlife across the Shire. While these rescues don't always make the headlines, they're an important part of helping protect our local environment and ensuring animals receive the care they need.

If you come across injured wildlife:
β€’ Keep a safe distance and assess the situation.
β€’ Keep pets and people away if it is safe to do so.
β€’ Contact the Shire Rangers or a wildlife rescue organisation for advice and assistance.
β€’ Never put yourself at risk, especially near roads or larger animals.

If you come across injured wildlife, visit our Animal Welfare Contacts page for advice and details of who you can contact:

🚧 Oakford Volunteer Bush Fire Station Update πŸš’

Construction of the new Oakford Volunteer Bush Fire Station continues to progress well, with several key milestones achieved over the past fortnight.

βœ… Concrete slab works are now complete
βœ… Site earthworks and levelling have been finalised
βœ… Landscaping along boundary areas is continuing
βœ… Structural steel fabrication and procurement has been completed

The project is now entering an exciting new phase, with structural steel arriving on site and er****on works set to commence. This will see the station begin to take shape above ground as construction progresses.

The new facility will provide Oakford's volunteer firefighters with a modern, purpose-built base to support emergency response and community safety across the district.

Thank you to everyone involved in delivering this important community infrastructure project.

Project remains on schedule for completion in April 2027

πŸ“šπŸŽ¨ Students are helping paint a new chapter at Byford Library!

A vibrant new mural is transforming the library entrance, turning a plain concrete pathway into a colourful celebration of local creativity and native wildlife.

The final mural design incorporates artwork created by students from Byford Secondary College , featuring their interpretations of a cockatoo, kookaburra and native flora. Even the colour palette was drawn from the students' original designs!

Delivered by Blank Walls through the Activate Byford program, the project is creating a more welcoming entrance to the library while showcasing the talent of local young people.

Be sure to check it out the next time you visit!
