🔥 Unattended Fire – SPRING FLAT

At approximately 5:18pm on Sunday, Mudgee HQ was called to Spring Flat Road following reports of two unattended burn piles that had reignited.

Three Mudgee appliances responded and found one pile containing timber and rubbish, while the second was burning beneath a large overhanging tree. Crews extinguished both piles and ensured the area was left safe before returning to station.

Even when a fire looks out, heat can remain deep inside a pile and cause it to reignite. Always fully extinguish your burn, continue monitoring it and never leave it unattended.

With the warmer weather approaching, now is the time to prepare your family and property for the upcoming bush fire season.

🔥 GRASS FIRE – BUCKAROO

On Monday afternoon, Mudgee HQ was paged to reports of a grass fire in the Buckaroo area.

On arrival, crews found a grass fire burning with flame heights around half a metre and a slow rate of spread. Crews quickly got to work containing the fire before commencing mop up operations.

Approximately a quarter of a hectare was burnt before the fire was contained. NSW Ambulance was also in attendance, treating one person for heat exhaustion and minor burns.

A great effort from all crews and emergency services involved. 🚒🚑

🌿 This fire is also a timely reminder that the fire season is getting closer, and now is the time to start getting ready.

Don’t wait until there’s smoke in the air to start thinking about your property. Take some time now to:

Clear leaves, bark and other flammable material from around your home
Keep lawns and grass areas maintained
Check gutters and remove built-up debris
Make sure hoses can reach around your property
Talk with your family about what you’ll do if a fire threatens

🔥 GET READY WEEKEND 2026 – MUDGEE HQ 🔥

Bush fire season is approaching, and now is the time to start getting your home, family and property prepared.

Come down to Mudgee HQ and talk with your local firefighters about the simple things you can do now to help reduce your bush fire risk and be better prepared for the season ahead.

● Learn what you should have ready if you need to leave

🇺🇸 Deployment to America!

For the next six weeks, the Americans have decided they need a little extra help. so naturally, we’ve sent them Max. 😂

One of our very own Mudgee HQ firefighters, and recently elected Captain of Piambong Brigade, Max Beechey has headed across the Pacific to assist with firefighting operations in the United States.

Max has already been spotted inspecting the local firefighting appliances, presumably working out which one he can fit in his carry on luggage for the trip home. 🚒

Over the next six weeks, we expect Max will:

- Learn that a “tanker” means something completely different over there.
- Be forced to measure everything in miles, gallons, and Fahrenheit like it’s still 1776.
- Attempt to explain what a “ute” is at least 67 times.
- Return home believing every fire truck requires a massive bullbar, 14 flashing lights, and an engine large enough to power Mudgee.

Jokes aside, being selected to represent the NSW RFS in the United States and share knowledge with firefighters from around the world is something to be extremely proud of.

We’re bloody proud of you, Max. 🇦🇺

Stay safe, enjoy every minute, learn plenty, and show them how we do things back home.

And remember, you have to come back in six weeks. Buying a RAM while you’re over there does not count as a valid reason to extend your deployment. 😂🇺🇸🔥

Looking for something to do this weekend?

🧑‍🌾 Come and say g’day to NSW RFS Heritage at the Mudgee Small Farm Field Days!

🚒 There’ll be a great range of heritage fire trucks on display, plenty of fire safety tips to pick up, and a chance to have a chat with some of our old fashioned firefighters, the trucks maybe vintage, but the stories are still running hot!

Mudgee HQ members will also be helping with parking at the Henry Lawson Drive car park, so be sure to give us a wave on your way in!

✈️ On the 27th of June, members from Mudgee HQ were invited to Bankstown Airport to view some of the NSW RFS rotary and fixed wing aircraft fleet.

It was a great afternoon with plenty of interesting information shared about the aircraft, their capabilities, and the important role they play during incidents across the state.

Members were shown how the different aircraft are used on the fire ground, from helicopters fitted with thermal imaging cameras to assist with identifying hotspots and using the Bambi bucket to put fires out, through to fixed wing aircraft that can scan large fire areas and provide crews with valuable information from above.

These aircraft are an important tool for the RFS, helping with fire detection, mapping, intelligence gathering, crew support, and giving incident management teams a clearer picture of what is happening on the ground.

It was a great opportunity for our members to get a closer look at the aircraft and learn more about how aviation supports firefighters and communities during bush fires, grass fires, floods, and other emergency incidents.

A big thank you to everyone involved for taking the time to show us around and explain the work that goes on behind the scenes. 🚁

Wednesday night training was a fantastic opportunity for our members to work alongside the crew from
Fire and Rescue NSW Station 387 Mudgee, putting our skills, teamwork and communication to the test in a realistic training scenario.

Working together with Fire and Rescue NSW is vital. Whether we’re responding to an incident in town or out in the bush, we support each other and work towards the same goal, keeping our community safe.

The evening saw crews from 387 make entry into our smoke filled training container in Breathing Apparatuses to conduct a search and rescue operation for occupants trapped inside. Once the search had been completed, our RFS members entered with Breathing Apparatuses into the structure to continue the search and carry out any fire suppression activities that were required.

We were also fortunate to have Cudgegong District RPAS Operator Nick, SDC of Mullamuddy Brigade on hand, showcasing the capabilities of the drone and thermal imaging technology. These tools are becoming increasingly valuable at incidents, providing crews with greater situational awareness and helping improve firefighter safety.

A big thank you to the crew from Fire and Rescue NSW 387 for sharing their knowledge, experience, and practical tips throughout the night. The lessons learned and skills developed during training nights like these help ensure we’re better prepared for real incidents when the call comes.

Cudgegong District Medal Ceremony 2026

On Friday evening, members from across the Cudgegong District gathered to recognise the dedication, commitment and service of our volunteers at the annual Medal Ceremony.

Mudgee HQ Brigade was proud to have several members recognised for their contributions to the Rural Fire Service and our local community.

🏅 Alan “Yowie” Selman AFSM was awarded a Cudgegong District Exceptional Service Plaque, recognising his outstanding contribution to the Rural Fire Service over nearly 50 years of service. Yowie has held numerous leadership positions throughout his career, including Captain, President, Training Officer and Group Officer for 24 years. His commitment, knowledge, mentorship and leadership have left a lasting impact on Mudgee HQ Brigade, the Cudgegong District and the wider NSW Rural Fire Service.

Members able to attend on the night included Alan Selman, Dearne Midson and Katrina Dunshea, while Captain Andrew Selman proudly accepted awards on behalf of members who were unable to attend.

Congratulations to all recipients from across the Cudgegong District who were recognised throughout the evening. Thank you to all our volunteers for your ongoing commitment, dedication and service to our communities.
