🇮🇹 Outstanding Achievement in Italian Studies

Congratulations to Mount Lawley Senior High School alumni Elizabeth Widderick (Class of 2024) on being awarded the prestigious Consulate of Italy–Qantas Award for Excellence in Italian Language and Culture at the University of Western Australia.

🖌️ Year 7 Chinese Calligraphy Activity

Our Year 7 Chinese students recently participated in a Chinese calligraphy activity as part of their cultural learning.

Using traditional-style calligraphy brushes and reusable water-writing cloths, students explored the art of Chinese calligraphy while learning the correct techniques for holding and controlling the brush. As the water revealed the characters on the special cloth, students were able to practise repeatedly in a fun, engaging and mess-free way.

The activity provided a valuable opportunity for students to experience an important aspect of Chinese culture while developing their understanding of Chinese characters. It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm, creativity and concentration students brought to the session.

Aboriginal Veterans Commemorative Service 🎖️

On Wednesday 27 May, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander veterans, their families, community members, students and dignitaries gathered at Kings Park to honour the service and sacrifice of First Nations men and women who have served Australia in times of war, conflict and peacekeeping operations.

Students from Mount Lawley Senior High School’s Aboriginal Excellence Program (AEP) and Follow the Dream program attended the service, laying wreaths in honour of Aboriginal veterans and paying their respects to those who served. Our School Choir and Concert Band also performed Abide with Me and the Australian National Anthem.

Following the service, guests attended the premiere screening of The Not Forgotten, a powerful documentary highlighting the stories of Aboriginal soldiers who lost their lives during the First World War. The film showcased the remarkable work of Aboriginal students who researched the lives of these servicemen and helped ensure their stories are remembered.

A special point of pride for our school was the involvement of former student Tahlia-Rae Willcocks and School Captain James Anderson, who served as Master of Ceremonies for the event. The documentary also highlighted the work of Follow the Dream students whose research contributed to plaques being placed on Avenue of Honour trees dedicated to Aboriginal soldiers who died during World War I, reconnecting families with stories that had been lost to history.

The day was a powerful reminder of the importance of remembrance, truth-telling and ensuring the contributions of Aboriginal servicemen and servicewomen continue to be recognised for generations to come.

🍝 Year 10 Italian Dinner at Siena’s 🍕

Pasta, pizza, gelato and plenty of lively conversation set the scene for our recent Year 10 Italian Dinner at Siena’s of Leederville.

Students enjoyed an evening of authentic Italian dining, sharing a range of traditional pasta and pizza dishes before finishing with delicious gelato. The excursion provided a wonderful opportunity to experience Italian culture and cuisine beyond the classroom while spending time together in a relaxed and enjoyable setting.

With the atmosphere of a traditional Italian trattoria, students fully embraced the experience and, for a moment, it was easy to forget we were still in Perth. The only reminder was the collection of signed West Coast Eagles jumpers on the wall, celebrating some of the restaurant’s famous visitors.

A fantastic evening of great food, great company and a little taste of Italy.

🇯🇵 Building Global Connections

In Term 1, we were delighted to welcome our Japanese guests from Chikuyo Gakuen Junior High School for a week-long cultural exchange at Mount Lawley Senior High School.

Organised by Gold Educational Tours, the visit provided students with a wonderful opportunity to build international friendships, experience Australian school life and immerse themselves in our school community.

GOLD Educational Tours has put together this fantastic video showcasing the many experiences, connections and memories made during their time at Mount Lawley.

We hope you enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed hosting our visitors.

🤝 Building the Leaders of Tomorrow

As part of our ongoing commitment to developing student leadership at Mount Lawley Senior High School, our second Student Leader Training Session was held after school during Week 4.

Prefects, Year Councillors and House Captains came together for an afternoon of learning, collaboration and camaraderie, with our newly elected Year 7 Councillors and House Captains officially welcomed into the wider student leadership team.

Students also heard from Esther Deng, Client Services Manager for CARAD-Centre for Asylum Seekers, Refugees and Detainees Inc, who spoke about the impact of the Year 8 fundraising efforts in Term 1. Esther, a Mount Lawley SHS graduate and former School Captain, also shared insights into her pathway after school.

Year 12 Prefect Lana presented on a student-led uniform project that has been in development since Year 11, highlighting the importance of planning, research, data collection and persistence. Students were also given a preview of new uniform prototypes.

The session concluded with students working together in year groups and house teams to reflect on their leadership achievements and plan future initiatives for the remainder of the year.

Thank you to Lou Kirkby and Student Services for coordinating another valuable leadership development opportunity. 👏
