Books off the shelf, characters off the page.

A little preview of what our members are borrowing for Book Week this year. Every one of these costumes came from the MHTL costume rack, matched up with a book the kids already loved reading.

Book Week 2026 runs 22 to 28 August, and the theme is Symphony of Stories. Whether your kid wants to be an old favourite or something brand new, have a look through our collection first before hitting the shops.

Library opens tomorrow (Sat) at 9am!

Tag us or use if you post a Book Week photo. We'd love to see the pairings.

Book Week starts Saturday.

If your kid has come home from kindy or school asking to dress up as a character from their favourite book, and you're wondering where a bunny outfit, fairy dress or ladybird are going to come from ... this is your reminder: MHTL has a costume collection.

Costumes get worn once for Book Week, maybe a birthday party, and then sit in the wardrobe. Borrowing from the library instead means you get the dress-up moment without the cost, the storage, or the mid-year guilt of a barely-worn outfit in the op-shop bag.

This year's Book Week theme is Symphony of Stories, illustrated by Briony Stewart. There's plenty of scope for whichever book your kid loves right now.

Pop in Saturday 9 - 11am to see what's on the costume rack. First in, first served.

A real microscope, built for small hands

Three zoom levels (100x, 200x, 300x), 12 slides with real plant, insect, and animal specimens, and a built-in voice that reads out facts as your kid explores.

Why it earns its shelf space:

Observational science is one of the earliest STEM skills, and it starts well before school. Looking closely, asking questions, and comparing what you see across different slides builds the same habits that later become the scientific method.

Ages 4+.

Available to borrow now - just one of the items in our STEM section.

Down on the farm πŸ„

The Hape Toys Australia Happy Farm Playset is new in the library.

This 36 piece wooden farm comes with a barn, a farmer, animals, a chicken coop, vegetables, a little shop and tools. The panels flip to switch between an animal feeding area and a veggie garden, there is a hay lift and a turning windmill, and the roof lifts off with a carry handle so the whole farm travels. Lovely for open ended play and early ideas about animals and growing food.

Free to borrow with your membership, and new families are welcome to join. What would your child grow first?

πŸ”ŽThe Lovevery Observer Play Kit.
Designed for 3-year-olds (months 37 to 39+).

Problem solving, planning ahead, and emotional literacy. Nine components including a modular playhouse, weather-planning board, emotion dolls, shoe-side stickers, and a three-book emotion story set.

The Observer is a particularly good one to try before committing, because it leans heavily into routine-building and emotional literacy tools that may or may not suit your child. Borrowing lets you find out first.

Available now on the shelf.

What a way to mark 35 years. πŸŽ‚

Thank you to every family who came along on Saturday and filled the room with noise, play and a fair bit of cake. Seeing so many of you there, some who joined last month and some who borrowed from us decades ago, is exactly what a toy library is for.

A few thanks to share:
πŸ€ Thriving in Motion - Exercise for Young People for running the activities and helping us launch our new Play to Grow sensory and motor development kits
πŸ–Œ Pelangi Face Painting & Balloon Twisting for the face painting, which had a queue from start to finish.
🎁 John Carey for donating the door prize which had something for the whole family.
🏠 City of Vincent for use of the Mount Hawthorn Community Centre
πŸ“Έ Christian Rusli Media (christianr.media) for capturing the day

And our committee, who pulled together the food, decorations and cakes, and made the whole afternoon happen.

Here's to the next 35 years of borrowing, sharing and play!

Saturday is our 35th Anniversary Party and we would love to see you there!

One important change to note: the library will not open at the usual 9am on Saturday. Instead, borrowing and returns will happen at the party, from 1:30 to 3:30pm at Mount Hawthorn Community Centre.

So bring anything that is due back, take home something new from the latest additions to the library, and stay for the afternoon. There will be active play, face painting and snacks, plus a first look at our new Play to Grow kits.
See you Saturday afternoon.
