Gorse is an invasive w**d that grows into large prickly shrib with bright yellow flowers. It is also extremely flammable. There unfortunately is no shortage of this w**d around our township.

Gorse contains volatile oils and retains fine dead material within its dense thickets, acting as a "ladder fuel" that can easily turn ground fires into dangerous crown fires.

If you would like to know how to control gorse on your property then book in for the workshop coming up at Snake Valley.

Gorse Warriors Unite and learn from the best !

A free gorse festival will be held on the 14th of June starting at the Snake Valley
Community Hall.

There will be guest speakers, information on controlling gorse,
property mapping, a paddock ‘walk and talk’, and a fun event to finish it off!
A free lunch will be provided.

A great opportunity to immerse into best practice gorse with people who know a lot about it.

On Wednesday we were paged for a smouldering camp fire in the local bushland not far out of town. Someone lit a fire on top of a tree stump and then didn't extinguish it before leaving.

The fire was in a clear area but was burning underground in the root system. Forest Fire Management Victoria and Gordon Fire Brigade also attended.

🔥 EV Fires 101: What Is an EV Fire? 🔋

When people hear “EV fire,” they often think the battery is always to blame — but that’s not always true.

An electric vehicle (EV) can experience:
🚗 A non-battery fire — caused by tyres, upholstery, wiring, or external damage, just like any petrol or diesel vehicle.
⚡ A battery fire — known as , when a damage triggers collapse inside lithium-ion cells, leading to off-gassing, ignition or the potential for explosion.

Both are serious, but battery fires behave differently, so it’s important for emergency responders to be able to know how tell if a battery pack is involved.

Understanding the difference helps emergency responders determine what resources they need and how long the incident may go for.

CFA is urging landowners to rethink burning-off activities today (Saturday 25 April), with above-average temperatures and moderate winds forecast for parts of Victoria.

Landowners are also encouraged to check any recent burn-offs from the past 24 to 48 hours to ensure they are completely extinguished.

Temperatures are forecast to reach the mid to high 20s across parts of Victoria on Saturday, with moderate northerly winds expected in some western areas, reaching around 30km/h.

If weather and forest conditions are suitable, firefighters from the Midlands District will ignite the Mount Egerton – North Main Road planned burn on Thursday 23 April.

The 33 hectare burn is being undertaken to reduce risk of bushfire to Mount Egerton and surrounding communities.

The burn will be ignited over one day. FFMVic crews will continue to patrol and monitor in the days following.

Without planned burning and other fuel management works, bushfires will be bigger and harder for our firefighters to control.

🔥You may see or smell smoke.
👀Watch for our crews and follow their directions.
📞If you experience symptoms that may be due to smoke exposure, please seek medical advice or call NURSE-ON-CALL on 1300 60 60 24.
ℹ️Detailed information about current air quality throughout Victoria can be found at www.epa.vic.gov.au

Unexpected weather conditions can mean plans change at the last minute and a burn may not go ahead, even if communities have already been notified.

When this happens, our crews will continue to monitor the conditions and re-schedule the burn for a later date.

The following information came via email this afternoon.

Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) and Country Fire Authority (CFA) advise that the MT EGERTON - NORTH MAIN RD planned burn, located at 1 KM E MT EGERTON will be ignited at any time within the next 10 days if conditions are suitable.

Weather conditions and fuel moisture levels at the burn site are being monitored and safety checks carried out in preparation for the burn. If conditions are not suitable, the burn may be postponed.

Note that some burns are carried out in stages, with part of the burn completed, and crews returning later to carry out further work within the burn area. If so, you will receive notifications when the burn is once again scheduled to be carried out.

Training on Sunday centred around hazardous materials incidents. One lucky participant had to dress up in the yellow suit. We now know why you need to put the gloves on before the coat.

The process highlighted the importance of having a few extra people around to help get firefighters into the appropriate gear at an incident.
