MOUNT BUFFALO -WINTER VISITOR INFORMATION
Week 1st to 7th June
Mount Buffalo in Autumn is a " Winter Wonderland"

Welcome to Winter at Mount Buffalo, colder nights and days so rug up and enjoy the walks, waterfalls and views.

There is minimal snow forecast over the next 14 days, see attached forecasts (mostly at high levels and unlikely to fall at Mount Buffalo). We often do not get tobogganable snow until as late as early July but fingers crossed for mid to late June.

Snow chains need to be carried at Mount Buffalo on ALL VEHICLES and fitted as directed from this opening weekend https://visitmountbuffalo.com.au/winter/snow-chains/

BIKE SAFE ON THE MOUNT BUFFALO ROAD
When driving watch out for bikes on the road as the Buffalo road is a favorite hill climb for road bike riders.
Mount Buffalo is a great bike rider destination but ensure that you can be seen easily on our narrow road with its numerous blind corners. It is recommended that bike riders have both flashing tail and headlights so that motor vehicles can observe you from further away, rather than at the last minute.
Bright clothes can also improve rider visibility.
For road cycling safety - see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FF3uHJNum6c

DRIVE SAFE ON THE MOUNT BUFFALO ROAD
We recommend all motor vehicles drive with headlights on low to increase vehicle visibility, in particular during storms, frosts wet, foggy or cloudy weather. Be patient with slow drivers or bike riders and only pass when safe (avoiding passing on corners). If driving slowly to enjoy the views, use the many pull over areas on the Buffalo road to let other drivers pass safely.
This Alpine Shire video is worth watching regarding safe driving on Alpine roads https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXmi-UHjWco&t=5s

Great photo - https://www.facebook.com/share/p/18QYgx2ogQ/

After spending two relaxing weeks in Bright, I’ve headed home to see my wife and the dogs.

While I was there, I spent quite a bit of time exploring Mount Buffalo, which is one of my favourite places in Victoria.

This image was captured at The Cathedral just after sunset. I love the way the last light catches the side of the massive granite stack.

'...on Bright to Mount Buffalo road... On rear in red ink "Bright to Mt Buffalo and return, 22 miles each way.'

Victoria Collections, from the Ballarat Tramway Museum.

Horse drawn vehicles - mail coach service - were still using this road into the 1920's, providing a passenger service primarily for tourists going the Chalet at Mt Buffalo, sightseeing along the way and enjoying tobogganing, skiing, bird watching and bush walking once there, many staying a few nights.

Very popular for decades, even in the 1880's fares had to be booked as the coaches on this route were always full.

Crawford & Co. had a monopoly on this route despite several other coach service owners requesting access. Michael (Mick) Dougherty was a well known driver for this service, in 1911 he took the Governor with a sight seeing party of VIP's to the Chalet.

Mick was popular and usually drove a grey team, so may be in this photo. He told great yarns and jokes to his passengers and had a quick wit when unusual questions were asked, or comments made.

In 1920 six coaches were carrying a total of 62 passengers down the mountain early in the morning, to meet the train at Bright. But all were held up when a leader of the front coach shied at a pile of wood - the coach (probably a vehicle called a drag) - and passengers rolled off the spur. Luckily a fallen tree stopped the coach rolling too far, nonetheless some people were knocked out. Nine passengers were injured; none seriously.

Horses were fine, a quick witted passenger leapt off the box seat of the second coach when the accident happened, and got them under control. The driver of the capsized coach, Mr. Stillard, was very experienced and had done that run for years.

In 1922 the horses took fright at a rolling stone at the nine mile post, causing the coach to tip over and roll 100 feet down an embankment. Thirty passengers on board. The driver J. Sullivan and several passengers were injured. No injuries were serious, a doctor attended the scene quickly and injured taken to hospital. The horses recovered too.

An axe was always carried as occasionally a fallen tree would need to be cleared from the road so they could get through. Needless to say at times snow conditions also a hazard - in 1917 the horses bolted in blinding snow conditions said to be the worst the drivers had ever experienced - the coach that time rolled 300 feet. No-one was seriously hurt luckily, nor the horses, and news reached the train which waited for the passengers who eventually arrived on another coach.
