Bush fires can occur quickly and without warning. Before you travel, make sure you have checked the conditions and have a plan in place if things change. Let people know your movements and if it’s not safe, avoid traveling altogether.

Always keep an eye out for emergency
vehicles and if you see a fire call triple Zero (000).

The Bush Fire Danger Period commences next week for the Wingecarribee Shire Council and Wollondilly Shire Council areas. From Monday 14 September, Fire Permits are required to light or maintain fire in the open.

To apply for a Fire Permit visit www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify and be sure to give us as much notice as possible as a Fire Permit Officer will need to visit your property prior to issuing a permit.

Now is the time to review your Bush Fire Survival Plan and know what you will do if a fire threatens.

🚨 Important Bush Fire Safety Update 🚨

The NSW RFS Southern Highlands has advised that, due to ongoing dry conditions and the forecast for warmer, drier weather, the Bush Fire Danger Period will commence early in the Wollondilly and Wingecarribee Local Government Areas from Monday, 14 September 2026.

From this date, a Fire Permit will be required for anyone intending to light a fire in the open within an RFS Fire District.

Fire Permits are free and can be obtained online via the NSW RFS:

Please remember that an RFS Fire Permit does not replace any approvals that may be required by your local council. Landholders should ensure they comply with all relevant council requirements before undertaking any burning activities.

With warmer temperatures and stronger winds forecast in the coming days, the RFS is also reminding residents to check any recent pile burns carefully. Fires can reignite, particularly where large logs, stumps or other heavy fuels remain.

If you have recently undertaken a burn, please:
✅ Check the burn site regularly
✅ Ensure all hot spots and smouldering material are fully extinguished
✅ Be extra vigilant during warm and windy conditions
✅ Have water and firefighting equipment readily available
✅ Never leave a fire unattended

Landholders are responsible for ensuring fires remain contained to their property. If a fire escapes or threatens property, call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

Please take the time to ensure any recent burns are completely extinguished and, from 14 September, that you have the required permits and approvals in place before lighting a fire.

🟡Elevated Fire Danger - Saturday 5 September🟡

Due to unseasonably warm and windy conditions tomorrow, the Fire Danger Rating will be raised to High for the Wingecarribee Shire Council and Wollondilly Shire Council areas.

🔥Landholders are urged to:
• Postpone all planned pile burning until conditions ease.
• Regularly check any pile burns conducted in recent weeks.
• Ensure burnt piles are completely extinguished, including checking for heat or smouldering material beneath the surface.
• Continue monitoring old burn sites while strong winds persist.

Remember, fines can apply if you fail to notify the RFS before lighting a fire or if your fire escapes your property.

If you see an unattended or escaped fire, call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

Today, 27 Local Government Areas (LGA) commence their Bush Fire Danger Period, with several areas beginning a month earlier than normal due to the prevailing dry conditions.

Additionally, two LGA's will commence their Bush Fire Danger Period on 14 September, which is two weeks earlier than normal.

Residents and land holders should ensure they understand the rules around the use of fire. Along with required fire permits, you must also notify your local fire authority and neighbours of your intent to burn 24 hours in advance.
