KINDNESS CONNECTS :: Meet the team behind The Community Cooking School!

A local kitchen with a big heart quietly doing remarkable things for community connection in the Wingecarribee.

Part of a much larger story, the Community Cooking School is part of Your Angel Charity, founded through the Kazacos Foundation in 2006, which provides practical community support across the Highlands through a range of programs, including Community Kids Workshops, a School Wellbeing Program and the Rainbow Project, which supports families facing chronic or terminal illness.

"Food has a way of bringing people together naturally. When people are cooking side by side, it creates a relaxed environment where conversations happen, confidence grows and real connection can form," says Program Manager, Danielle Losurdo.

ROADWORKS :: 17 JUNE 2026 Cavendish Street, Mittagong

Night works will begin on sections of Cavendish Street from Wednesday 17 June to address issues identified following recent asphalt renewal works.

PLANNED START TIME :: Wednesday 17 June 8pm

PLANNED FINISH TIME :: Thursday 18 June 530am

While most of the resurfacing has performed as expected, several isolated sections require further work. This includes removing affected pavement, assessment of the underlying pavement condition, reconstruction of deeper pavement layers where required, and laying a new asphalt surface.

We worked closely with the contractor to quickly investigate the issue, which was linked to a combination of asphalt delivery timing and temperature factors during construction.

The rectification works will be completed at no additional cost to Council.

Traffic changes and minor delays are expected during works. Cavendish Street will be closed from Old Bowral Road to Dalton Street and detours will be available. Onsite-traffic controllers will be available for residents, business operators and their customers to speak to if special assistance is required.

Say hello to Barney! Thanks to Friends of Wingecarribee Animal Shelter (FOWAS), Barney and his fellow shelter dogs have a brand new and much bigger dog run. Perfect for running off all that extra four-legged energy, the space is also being used by the FOWAS funded dog trainer to help the shelter pups prepare for rehoming.

The amazing FOWAS not only provided the funds for the dog run, they also paid the vet bills for the removal of a tumour Barney had been suffering from. So now he lives to fight another day, run around to his heart's content and learn how to be well-behaved in preparation for his fur-ever home.

A huge thank you to FOWAS, their volunteers and the incredibly generous people and businesses who donate funds. We appreciate all that your amazing organisation does so much - and so does Barney!

Why doesn't Council just charge developers more? Many development application (DA) fees are set by the NSW Government, so Council can't simply increase them.

Developers also pay contributions to help fund infrastructure needed for new growth, such as roads, footpaths, parks and community facilities.

Council recently expanded its developer contributions plan and is reviewing how contributions are collected to ensure new development helps pay for the infrastructure it needs.

What about Voluntary Planning Agreements (VPAs)? These are voluntary agreements between Council and developers that can provide additional funding, land, works or infrastructure to support development and need to be agreed to by both parties.

However, there are strict rules about how these funds can be used. They are generally intended to support infrastructure needed for growth and are not designed to fund Council’s ongoing maintenance and renewal responsibilities.
