Mabrouk (congratulations) to the Sudanese community for a successful and delicious community lunch today!

Sudanese food is the third of four ethnic cuisines that we’re featuring at the Morwell Neighbourhood House’s Cultural Food Festival this month.

It was such a delight to see diverse members of our community coming together celebrating culture through food and engaging in a friendly and safe space.

Thank you to Mona for organising a delectable community lunch and for sharing her personal journey as well as a bit of history of Sudan.

To the Sudanese community and to everyone who came today, we say, Shukran (thank you)!🙏

Thanks to the incredible kindness of a local catering company, we also have fresh sandwiches and a selection of sweets available in our Foodbank today.
Rather than seeing perfectly good food go to waste, they have generously chosen to donate it to us so it can go directly into the hands of people in our community who can use it. 💚
We could not be more thankful for this generosity. Partnerships and donations like this not only reduce food waste, but also allow us to offer more variety to the growing number of people accessing our Foodbank.

👶🧴💚 HAVE YOU GOT OPENED PACKETS OF NAPPIES YOU’RE NOT SURE WHAT TO DO WITH?

Maybe your little one has gone up a size, is toilet trained, or you simply have a few nappies left sitting in the cupboard.

We would love to take them off your hands! 💚

Morwell Neighbourhood House is currently experiencing a real need for nappies and personal care items to help us continue supporting local individuals and families doing it tough.

We would gratefully accept donations of:

👶 Nappies – all sizes, including opened packets
🧻 Baby wipes
🍼 Baby and toddler care products
🧴 Shampoo & conditioner
🧼 Soap & body wash
🪥 Toothbrushes & toothpaste
🧴 Men’s deodorant – particularly needed
🩸 Period products
🚿 Other new, unopened personal hygiene products

Every donation counts. Even half a packet of nappies that your child has outgrown can make a difference to another local family.

We are particularly short on men’s deodorant at the moment, along with nappies and other everyday hygiene essentials. These are items that can be expensive for people already struggling to cover food, rent, utilities and other household costs.

Donations help us ensure people accessing our Foodbank can receive essential personal care products alongside food relief.

📍 Donations can be dropped into:

💚 Have something sitting in the cupboard that you no longer need? Please consider passing it on to someone who does.

A FRIENDLY REMINDER 📅

Just a reminder to those that booked in to attend this Tuesday's Cultural Food Festival. Tomorrow, 15 September, will be the third ethnic group that will be cooking lunch and serving us the best of their native cuisine.

Huge thanks to the Sudanese community for participating in this project that seeks to feature the different ethnic groups that comprise our diverse community.

This project is made possible through a full financial grant from the State Government of Victoria.

We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday for another friendly and engaging community gathering.

The Lovable Larrikins having a fun day on Friday chucking the barbie at Immigration Park.

It’s not all hoomans and food though. Ben’s little friend Midnight popped in for a visit and kept the boys company.🐶

💚 182 MEALS – A NEW RECORD FOR OUR COMMUNITY COOKING TEAM! 💚

What an incredible effort in the People’s Kitchen at Morwell Neighbourhood House today!

On the menu was Chicken Schnitzel with Creamy Mash & Vegetables, and our Community Cooking Team absolutely smashed it, preparing an amazing 182 nutritious meals, all cooked right here in the Morwell Neighbourhood House kitchen! 👏

A massive thank you to Tracy, Kerrie, Paul and our lead cook Darren for giving up their time and putting so much hard work and dedication into today’s cook.

👨‍🍳 A special shout-out to Darren!

Darren originally put his hand up to help in this space because he loves cooking and wanted another way to give back to his community. He had previously helped in the People’s Kitchen when our Lovable Larrikins group volunteered for a cooking session, and he has since stepped up to help lead our Community Cooking Team.

Darren brings around 30 years of cooking experience, including volunteering in a church, cooking for camps, breakfasts and other events. We are incredibly fortunate to have that experience being shared with our volunteers and, ultimately, benefiting people right across our community.

🙋‍♀️🙋‍♂️ COULD YOU HELP LEAD A PEOPLE’S KITCHEN TEAM?

As our People’s Kitchen continues to grow, we are looking for more experienced volunteers who could step into lead cooking roles.

You might be a:
👨‍🍳 Retired chef or cook
🏕️ Experienced camp cook
🍲 Community or club cook
🥘 Someone with commercial or large-scale cooking experience
❤️ Or simply an experienced cook who would love to use your skills to give back.

Our cooking teams prepare large batches of nutritious meals that go directly back into supporting local people experiencing food insecurity.

If you have the skills, experience and a few hours to give, we would absolutely love to hear from you.

SWEET CRAVINGS ACHIEVED🍡🍯

Yesterday was another day for turning harvests into sweet satisfaction as our Stirring Stories volunteers rolled up their sleeves and made Lemon Coconut Slices and Lemon and Coconut Balls.

Together they came up with a total of 30 containers of these yummy goodies that were a huge blockbuster among our foodbank clients.

They were so popular that everything was gone by lunchtime today.😋

Thank you ladies for your continued commitment in supporting the community. Huge thanks also to members of the community who registered their fruit trees so that we could harvest some of their produce and turn them into food to giveaway for free to everyone who accesses the foodbank.

We are still on the lookout for more volunteers for this project that is called the Grow Hub. Whether you are a fruit tree owner and would like to donate some surplus produce, or you have time to spare to help our harvesting team or you would like to be part of our cooking/baking team, please reach out to us via messenger or by phoning 51345488.
