Parnana Pikurtu Wildlife Sanctuary

Parnana Pikurtu Wildlife Sanctuary Find us in Moorine Rock town in the Eastern Wheatbelt. We rescue, care for and rehabilitate injured, sick and orphaned wildlife.

We are situated with Nulla Nulla Farm Retreat. Our name comes from the Kaalamaya language of the Kaprun People and was suggested to us by Brian Champion, one of the Aboriginal elders who is an old friend of the Goodhill Family. The name is pronounced "Pana Pikurtu" and loosely translated means the Kangaroo's Place.

Thanks to a generous grant from Lotterywest, we have just completed a 15km perimeter fence of our Parnana Pikurtu Wildlife Sanctuary in Moorine Rock. With funds of $67,928.00 from them in addition to a DPIRD Animal Welfare grant of $44,580.00, we were able to purchase all the materials needed to erect a 1.8m high perimeter fence, ensuring protection of all the native flora and fauna within the 2200 acre sanctuary area. This includes threatened species such as Malleefowl plus all the macropods at various stages of rehabilitation. It also affords protection to all the existing bush plus the 60,000 native seedlings we have planted to increase wildlife habitat.
Heartfelt thanks to Lotterywest and DPIRD for believing in and funding our project as without that support the plans could not have come to fruition. Finally, huge thanks go to Ron Goodhill's superhuman and tireless efforts to get the job done.

Day 19 in care for little Gumnut and huge change in that time. From a 13g white fluff ball to 81g today, eyes open, and beginning to look more like a Tawny Frogmouth. Absolute little sweetie!

Meet Gumnut for an overdose of cuteness. She's a little orphaned Tawny Frogmouth chick. Less than a week old, weighing in at a massive 13g and looking more like a gum blossom than a bird. She now weighs 20g and is going well. So tiny and fragile. Fingers crossed.

Always the birdsmaid, never The Bird… Until now. πŸ‘‘

Congratulations to the Tawny Frogmouth (Podargus strigoides), Guardian Australia and BirdLife Australia's Bird of The Year 2025. It’s previously landed in second place, and while you wing some, you lose some, this time it flew into number one. Im-peck-able, really.

A few fun facts about the Tawny Frogmouth:

πŸ₯‡ They are masters of camouflage and can sit motionless in a tree for hours.
πŸ₯‡ They are monogamous and mate for life.
πŸ₯‡ Their babies are tiny fluffballs with giant mouths.

In second and third place were the Baudin's Black-Cockatoo and the Gang-gang Cockatoo. But if the Tawny Frogmouth can teach us anything, it's that your time always comes.

Little Miner bird brought in last night by Bree and Mel from Sothern Cross. Thanks girls, little bird would surely have perished on the road where you found him if you hadn't spotted him and taken him in to care.

Just when ou think it's safe to go outside for morning tea...... Noisy Miner raised by us as an orphaned chick and successfully released back to the wild where he belongs. He still pops in on a daily basis to check out what goodies we may have to eat. Today it's Ron's hot x bun πŸžπŸ¦πŸ˜‚
