𝐀 𝐑𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐆𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐨𝐧𝐲𝐨𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐚 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐞 🏪✨

We’re excited to share this rarely seen photograph of the Moonyoonooka Store, taken in 1949. Donated by Beth Drayton (daughter of Keith Roy & Roma Shilling, nee Neame). The photo was taken while her parents were on honeymoon in Geraldton.

Originally built in 1920 by former railway ganger David Mitchell, the little shop began as a room at the front of his home and has served the district ever since.

For more than 105 years, the Moonyoonooka Store has been a familiar landmark for locals, a place where generations have stopped for fuel, supplies and a friendly chat.

𝐀 𝐋𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐒𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐋𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 – 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝟏𝟗𝟓𝟎 𝐔𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐟𝐭🚗🕵️‍♂️

In a quirky coincidence, the vehicle featured in the photograph we shared earlier today, parked outside the Moonyoonooka Store in 1949, was at the centre of a small drama the following year.

On 7 November 1950, the Geraldton Guardian reported that Mr F. Constantino, a well-known greengrocer from Marine Terrace, discovered his 1928 green Pontiac utility (registration GN 574) had been stolen overnight from Marine Terrace. Police were notified, but initially there was no trace of the vehicle.

Just two days later, on 9 November 1950, the newspaper published an update. The missing utility had been found near Dongara by Mr Criddle, with Police Constable A. Kennedy confirming it was undamaged although all the petrol had been used. Mr Constantino travelled to Dongara and safely recovered it.

A wonderful example of how a simple photograph can open the door to a story, reminding us that every vehicle, street and shopfront has its own place in Geraldton’s history.
