As Operations Manager at the TEC, Sarah provides structure that helps elections run smoothly. From establishing election offices and counting centres, to appointing returning officers, coordinating voting processes and developing election timelines, she works behind the scenes to ensure everything comes together.
Sarah’s election journey began in 2014 as a university student providing IT support at a scrutiny centre. Since then, she's worked in various roles across the organisation and, today, she's responsible for overseeing the operational delivery of major elections across Tasmania.
Local government elections are conducted primarily by post, with teams managing the production, distribution and processing of large volumes of ballot packs. Much of Sarah’s work happens long before voting begins – coordinating staffing and timelines, testing systems and processes, and planning for contingencies to ensure the team is prepared for whatever comes their way.
“The better prepared we are, the more able we are to respond when something unexpected inevitably happens,” Sarah says. “Elections involve a huge number of detailed processes, and part of my role is to ensure everyone understands the importance of getting those details right, in the right order.”
For Sarah, the most rewarding part of the job is seeing her team grow in confidence, take ownership of important responsibilities and work together to deliver an election that gives every elector the opportunity to participate.
“People come together during elections. It’s hard work, often under significant pressure, but everyone understands the importance of what we’re delivering.”
