Monarto Safari Park is the largest safari park that will exist outside of Africa, spanning more than 1,000 hectares of fauna and flora and the only zoological park to be completely power neutral. Owned and operated by Zoos South Australia Monarto Safari Park opened in 1983 as a closed special purpose breeding facility. After officially opening to the public in October 1993, Monarto has evolved int

o a true biopark representing a unique blend of a conservation and zoological park. Its principle purpose is to provide a place for the conservation of Australian and exotic wildlife, public recreation and education. Monarto Safari Park is located 45 minutes (70 kilometres) from South Australia's capital city, Adelaide, and is the gateway to the picturesque Murraylands region. The park is open every day of the year from 9:30am to 5:00pm and focuses on African and Australian animals. The zoology and botany of these continents is reflected in the parkโ€™s major exhibits; Chimpanzee, Cheetah, African Painted Dog and Lion viewing platforms, Southern White Rhinoceros Boma viewing area, African Waterhole viewing platform and Yellow-footed Rock-wallaby walk-through exhibit.

Today we are handing the camera over to Keeper Hannah for moment of bliss with Cheetah, Kwatile. ๐Ÿ†

There's nothing better than a good scratch session!

Unlike other big cats, Cheetah donโ€™t roar. Instead, they can growl and make sounds that are more like a high-pitched chirp.

Cheetahs also bark to talk to each other, and they can purr both when they breathe in and when they breathe out! ๐Ÿพ

It's keeper takeover time! ๐Ÿฆ’

Let's dive into Keeper Haidee's camera roll and get within a tongue-lick of Volta. ๐Ÿฅ•โœจ

While it's definitely tasty, hand feeding fruit and veggies to the giraffe is also part of their conditioning training.

It allows keepers to get close to the herd within their habitat so they can do vet checks, easily give medication, and build strong, positive relationships with each animal.

What does it take to create a new home for Asian Elephants?

Before the Elephants of Asia Visitor Precinct opens at Monarto Safari Park, we're taking you back to where it all began.

In the first episode of our special retrospective series, revisit the moment Zoos SA launched one of the most ambitious projects in our history and the vision to create a future home for Asian Elephants in South Australia.

Hear from the people behind the project, including teams from Perth Zoo and Auckland Zoo , as they share why finding a new home for these remarkable animals was so important and how an entire community came together to make it possible.

This is the story of the vision, the passion, and the first steps on an extraordinary journey.

"The moral of the story is not to cheat. Itโ€™s played its part in generations over the face of the globe to mould and shape a healthy future." ๐ŸŒฑ

Last Friday for National Reconciliation Week, our Aboriginal Learning on Country team at Monarto Safari Park gathered around the fire to share some native hibiscus and river mint bush tea and a freshly cooked damper to have a yarn about what it means to be connected to Country.

To them, reconciliation means listening, learning, and breaking down walls to build a better future for the generations to come. We need each other more than ever. ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’›โค๏ธ

Last week, the elephant precint's biggest waterhole was filled for the very first time. As the water flowed in, Burma watched it all unfold.

Thank you to SA Water for keeping the water flowing and helping bring this project to life.

๐ŸฆŒ Today is World Bongo Day! ๐ŸฆŒ

Did you know bongos were once thought to sweat blood?

Their rich reddish-brown coats can leave a red stain on damp vegetation, leading to myths that they secreted "red sweat" or blood. In reality, it's simply natural pigmentation from their coat rubbing off when wet.

Here at Monarto Safari Park, we're lucky to care for Isaac, a 14-year-old Eastern Bongo (also known as a Mountain Bongo). Isaac arrived from Melbourne Zoo in 2013 and spends his days living his best life, browsing on his favourite leafy greens and exploring the scrub-filled off-limits areas of the park.

Mountain Bongos are one of the world's rarest antelope species, with fewer than 100 individuals remaining in the wild, surviving in isolated forest habitats in Kenya.

Every animal like Isaac plays an important role in helping connect people with nature and raising awareness of species facing an uncertain future.
