AusAlert is s a new national warning system that uses the latest technology to send emergency messages to compatible mobile devices.

It will be ready to use in October 2026, but before it launches, we need to test the system in communities across Australia, and Launceston, Tasmania has been chosen as a test location.

Around 11 am on Monday 15 June 2026 if you are in or around Launceston, your mobile devices, such as mobile phones, tablets and smart watches, may receive a test alert.

The AusAlert test in your area is a Priority Alert. It will vibrate and include a loud siren-like sound that lasts about 10 seconds. If receiving the test could disrupt you or cause you or someone you know to feel unsafe, visit the AusAlert website at ausalert.gov.au to find out how to turn a Priority Alert off on your device.

As this is just a test, you donโ€™t need to do anything, but in an actual disaster you should follow the alert instructions to keep yourself and others safe.

๐Ÿ”ฅ The 2025/26 Fire Permit Period will end statewide tomorrow (Thursday, 9 April 2026).

โ„น๏ธ From 2am tomorrow, if youโ€™re considering burning on your property:
๐Ÿค you donโ€™t require a fire permit
๐Ÿค BUT we encourage you to register your burn by calling 1800 000 699. Registering your burn will ensure your local Tasmania Fire Service brigade are aware of your plans and can respond accordingly.

๐Ÿ“ Remember:
โžก๏ธ Anyone conducting a burn must be capable of managing the fire and be mindful of changing weather conditions.
โžก๏ธ Make sure an adult is always attending the burn until it is fully extinguished.
โžก๏ธ Have suitable working firefighting equipment available to appropriately manage fire activity in the event that the fire begins to spread.
โžก๏ธ Never light fires in peat, humus, or marram grass.
โžก๏ธ Landowners are responsible for any damage caused by fires escaping their land.
โžก๏ธ Ensure your neighbours are aware and that your burn wonโ€™t adversely affect their health, or farming operations โ€“ particularly the wine industry, which is vulnerable to smoke.
โžก๏ธ Burning on private property is governed by local council by-laws and environmental laws about smoke emissions.

Being a volunteer isnโ€™t about being there for every call โ€” itโ€™s about showing up when you can. For farmers, families and busy locals, every bit helps. And thereโ€™s nothing quite like the pride of protecting your community, helping neighbours and knowing you made a difference when it mattered most.

Got questions? Have a yarn with our Chief or Officers about what itโ€™s really like and how to join. Pop into a training night or flick us a DM โ€” weโ€™re always happy to chat.

Tasmania Fire Service has suspended the issuing of fire permits statewide as we prepare for high fire danger across the state this weekend.

From 2am today (Friday, 9 January) until 2am Monday 12 January:

โ€ผ๏ธ No fire permits will be issued for burns during the period.
โŒ Any fire permits already issued for fires during this period are cancelled as conditions will be unsafe for burning.
๐Ÿ”ฅ If you have burned in the last week, check your fire is fully extinguished.
๐Ÿ”ฅ Burns under 1 cubic metre which do not require a permit are strongly discouraged.
๐Ÿ”ฅ Anyone having a campfire and/or wood fire barbecue is urged to never leave it unattended.
โ€ผ๏ธ Anyone operating equipment is urged to be vigilant to avoid any activity that may cause accidental ignition of vegetation during this suspension.

๐Ÿ“ฒ๐Ÿš’ If you need emergency assistance, or you see fire or smoke in the landscape, call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

Every year a small number of fires costs the Tasmanian community dearly. Some of these fires escape from smaller fires that were lit for good reasons. Some restrictions on lighting fires apply all year round, and there are additional precautions that must be taken during Fire Permit Periods and on Days of Total Fire Ban.
