Breaking Victorian political scoop from the jar.

Our contact at the Australian Democrats tells me they have now submitted their paperwork to the Victorian Electoral Commission after securing the numbers needed to move ahead with party registration in Victoria.

That means the Democrats are now formally taking the next step toward contesting the upcoming Victorian election.

For those following along, this has been a fairly serious membership push. They’ve been working to get enough Victorian members on the books, and I’m told they’ve now crossed the threshold required to lodge with the VEC.

There’s still process to go. Forms need to be checked. Members need to be verified. The VEC does what the VEC does, presumably surrounded by stamps, envelopes and the faint smell of democracy in triplicate.

But this is the point where it becomes real...

We invited them in for a Q&A recently, and they fronted up in a way that was genuinely impressive. They answered questions. A lot of questions. Possibly close to a thousand questions, which is either democratic engagement or a mild workplace injury.

Either way, credit where it’s due. It also did wonders for their numbers.

I’m not endorsing anyone here. I’m not joining a party. The jar is not becoming a branch office with better memes and more vinegar.

But I do think Australian politics benefits when more organised, serious, non-cooker options get onto the field.

And the Democrats are interesting.

They’re building momentum, they’re talking to people, and they seem to be finding traction among voters who feel politically isolated in the middle.

It’ll be very interesting to see how they perform in Victoria.

Sleeping giant?
Centrist revival?
A modest but meaningful return from the political wilderness?

Too early to say.

But they’ve submitted the papers.
The line has been crossed.
And the VEC now has another little bundle of democratic paperwork to stare at over its afternoon coffee.

The Australian Democrats have approached the jar.

Ryan Parris, Victorian & Tasmanian President of the Australian Democrats, has reached out with an idea...

They’re willing to answer questions from this page... good, bad, tough, sceptical, awkward, policy-heavy, whatever the jar wants to throw at them.

To be very clear: this is not an endorsement.

I’m not joining a party, polishing a how-to-vote card, or being paid in secret centrist cucumber coupons.

But the jar is approachable to most people who come in good faith.

You don’t have to pass some ideological purity test. If someone is willing to front up, answer questions, and cop scrutiny without hiding behind press-release fog, I’m usually willing to hear them out.

And I do like the idea of political parties having to answer real questions from real people outside the usual scripted nonsense.

So here’s the plan....

Drop your questions below.

Housing.
Tax.
Climate.
Democracy.
Corruption.
Gambling reform.
Media ownership.
Minor party strategy.
Preferences.
Immigration.
Cost of living.

Whatever you genuinely want answered.

If they answer properly, great.
If they dodge, we’ll notice.

That’s the deal.
Democracy, but with pickles.

The Albanese government buried its watered-down gambling reforms under budget cover—ignoring the Murphy inquiry's call for a total advertising ban and national regulator while bowing to the 'three big gorillas' of the gambling industry.

Australian's lose $25 billion per year. This is a serious issue which requires serious reform.
