Today saw 5 of our newer members brave the elements and undertake their crew member supervised training. This is the first step in the training as an ses volunteer.

This weeks training saw us join the Moe unit as part of our high risk weather session preparedness. Members from both units were able to do checks on the Divisional command post and Forward operations vehicle. Thanks to Moe for hosting us.

⚠️ SIMULATED EMERGENCY EXERCISE – NO ACTION REQUIRED

If you’re in Lakes Entrance today, Wednesday 26 August, you may notice a larger than usual presence of emergency service vehicles and personnel in the area.

This is part of PacWave26, an international tsunami preparedness exercise being conducted to test emergency services’ ability to detect, communicate and respond to a simulated tsunami hazard.

The exercise will include a simulated evacuation training exercise in the Lakes Entrance area.

This is a simulated event – there is no emergency and you do not need to take any action.

A number of emergency management agencies will be involved, including East Gippsland Shire Council, Victoria State Emergency Service, SES Gippsland Region, CFA (Country Fire Authority), CFA District 11 Headquarters Brigade, Victoria Police, VicEmergency, Parks Victoria, DEECA Gippsland, Ambulance Victoria, Rapid Relief Team AU and Emergency Management Victoria.

Severe Weather Warning for damaging winds.

Issued at 4:32 pm Sunday, 9 August 2026.

Where:
For people in parts of Central, East Gippsland, North Central, North East and West and South Gippsland Forecast Districts.

Locations which may be affected include Falls Creek, Dargo, Mt Baw Baw, Mt Hotham, Mt Buller and Omeo.

When:
Damaging winds continue over the central and eastern ranges today.

Situation:
North to northwesterly winds are strengthening over the state ahead of a cold front forecast to cross Victoria later today. Winds should weaken overnight ahead of a broad low pressure system moving across western Victoria and into Bass Strait on Monday.

For the Macedon and central ranges: damaging winds averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 90 km/h are possible during Sunday, and are forecast to ease during Sunday evening.

For the northeast ranges and alpine areas: damaging winds averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 100 km/h are likely during Sunday, and are forecast to ease early Monday morning.

Impacts:
Significant wind observations to 4:45 pm AEST Sunday include:
111 km/h wind gust was recorded at Mt Hotham at 2:48 pm
106 km/h wind gust was recorded at Mt Buller at 1:06 pm
96 km/h wind gust was recorded at Falls Creek at 1:45 pm
91 km/h wind gust was recorded at Kilmore Gap at 1:24 pm

What you should do:
The Victoria State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* If driving conditions are dangerous, safely pull over away from trees, drains, low-lying areas and floodwater. Avoid travel if possible.
* Stay safe by avoiding dangerous hazards, such as floodwater, mud, debris, damaged roads and fallen trees.
* Be aware - heat, fire or recent storms may make trees unstable and more likely to fall when it's windy or wet.
* Check that loose items, such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured. Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Stay indoors and away from windows.
* If outdoors, move to a safe place indoors. Stay away from trees, drains, gutters, creeks and waterways.
* Stay away from fallen powerlines - always assume they are live.
* Be aware that in fire affected areas, rainfall run-off into waterways may contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks. Heavy rainfall may also increase the potential for landslides and debris across roads.
* Stay informed: Monitor weather warnings, forecasts and river levels at the Bureau of Meteorology website, and warnings through VicEmergency website/app/hotline.

The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 11:00 pm AEST Sunday.
