Yesterday afternoon at 04:30 pm, the NSW SES Moss Vale and Wingecarribee units were activated to a motor vehicle accident on the Hume highway.

On arrival, our team found a single vehicle had left the road and struck a tree, with the driver trapped by confinement.

Whilst NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the driver, NSW SES rescue operators stabilised the car before cutting and removing the drivers side of the vehicle. Then, working alongside Paramedics, they assisted in the safe extrication of the driver while firefighters from Fire and Rescue NSW and NSW Rural Fire Service rendered the scene safe.

The NSW SES Moss Vale and Wingecarribee units wish everyone safe travels this long weekend and a reminder to take care on the road.

Yesterday, NSW SES volunteers helped coordinate and participated in a multi-agency rescue exercise at the Mittagong Airfield.

This exercise simulated an emergency landing after a mechanical issue was declared by an incoming fixed-wing aircraft.

NSW SES Rescue Operators extricated 3 persons who were trapped in a simulated airframe after it had to make an emergency landing.

We worked alongside Fire Rescue Mittagong and RFS Southern Highlands to ensure the scene was safe from HAZMAT and Fire.

Exercises like this test interagency interoperability across the Southern Highlands, and are a valuable opportunity to put our training into practice.

We are saddened to hear of the loss of two Marine Rescue NSW volunteers last night.
The NSW SES Wingecarribee Unit offers its sincere condolences to the volunteers families, friends and colleagues.

Last night was the darkest night ever experienced by Marine Rescue NSW.

Marine Rescue NSW volunteers answer the call for help 24/7 and last night six members from Marine Rescue Ballina did just that. They launched with a single mission, to save lives on the water and assist a yacht, reported to be in difficulty off the South Ballina break wall.

Tragically, two of our volunteers lost their lives during the response.

Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Todd Andrews said the devastating loss is a solemn reminder of the risks faced by volunteers who serve their communities.

“These two men were serving their local community and have made the ultimate sacrifice to help others.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of the deceased, their fellow crew members, the brave radio operators who handled the difficult communications during the incident, the entire Marine Rescue NSW family and the wider Ballina community during this incredibly difficult time.

“We are supporting our volunteers and their families through professional counselling and chaplaincy support.

“We ask that the privacy of those involved and their families be respected during this difficult time,” Commissioner Andrews said.

🌺 ANZAC Day — Lest We Forget 🌺

Today, the NSW SES Wingecarribee Unit, NSW SES Moss Vale Unit & NSW SES Wollondilly Unit pause to honour the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering spirit of the men and women who have served — and continue to serve — our nation in times of conflict, peacekeeping, and humanitarian need.

ANZAC Day reminds us of the values that shape our communities and our service: courage, mateship, endurance, and sacrifice.

As we gather at dawn services, marches, and commemorations across the Southern Highlands, we remember all who have served, all who still serve, and all who never made it home.

Lest we forget. 🧡💙

🎒🌊 Flood Rescue Awareness Training

On Tuesday night, our team rolled up their sleeves for a hands‑on throw bag simulation designed to sharpen rescue skills.

There’s nothing quite like practical training to remind us how important precision, teamwork, and calm decision‑making are when every second counts. From perfecting technique to supporting each other through each throw, the session was full learning, and plenty of good‑natured encouragement.

These nights strengthen more than our skills, they strengthen our connection as a team and our commitment to being ready when our community needs us most.

Proud of everyone who showed up, gave it their all, and walked away just that little bit more flood rescue ready 🚨
