Currently the brigade has a 2.4D Tanker and a quick fill pump. Milltown Fire Brigade started in 1951 with the first meeting held at Milltown Mission Road. The brigade was known as Homerton-Milltown Brigade but separated two years later into two brigades. ed the first private fire truck which was a tanker. The first CFA issued truck was an International Fire Truck and the first turn out was to Hollis Sawmill, Owen Nash bogged the truck at this fire. The brigade was heavily involved in Ash Wednesday. Sending vehicles, the driver on the day was Podge Bannam, Crew - Bob Bannam, Robbie Bannam and Ross Montgomery. Two incidents that day first called to Branxholme/Wallacedale Swamp, the truck got bogged with front tyres lifted in the air and the truck needing to be rescued. On the way home a pole fire involving a truck, took all four crew to hold down truck driver, the truck tyres burnt off and crews had to drive over live wires to get to the truck driver. The old mill fire was put out and given the all clear until they turned around and the fire had flared up again, whilst pumping water from the swamp they were invaded by snakes. In the early days most fires were started by the steam and diesel trains.

Fire restrictions end tomorrow, 01/05/2026 — but the end of the season doesn’t mean the end of common sense.

Before lighting up, stop and assess:

• Is it going to be windy later?
• Will smoke drift across roads and reduce visibility?
• Will it affect neighbours, stock or nearby homes?
• Can you stay there and supervise the burn the whole time?
• Do you have water, tools and equipment ready to extinguish it?
• Are conditions safe not just now, but for the next few days?

If you’re planning a private burn-off, please register it at https://firepermits.vic.gov.au/notify. This helps avoid unnecessary callouts for volunteer brigades and means crews can stay available for genuine emergencies. If smoke or flames are reported and the burn isn’t registered, firefighters may still be dispatched.

Before burning off, make sure you:

• Comply with CFA and local council rules
• Let neighbours know if smoke or fire may affect them
• Check the weather forecast
• Have a firebreak of at least 3 metres clear of flammable material
• Have enough people on site to monitor and control the burn safely

Residents in the south west of the state are being urged to check burn-off piles and bonfires as old as six months, following response from CFA volunteers to recent flare-ups.

Burning off is not permitted during the Fire Danger Period (FDP) without a permit; however, flare-ups are possible in piles that were burned before the FDP began.

On Saturday 7 February, CFA responded to a fire that ignited from a bonfire lit six months prior.

The reignition spread quickly to a nearby shed and unfortunately the shed could not be saved.

Luckily, crews were able to protect surrounding paddocks, plantations and the nearby home.

Deputy Chief Officer for South West Region Adrian Gutsche said given recent conditions landowners need to do everything they can to help prevent further start-ups of potentially devastating fires.

"We know burn-offs can flare up months down the track, so it's important residents are consistently monitoring wind conditions.

"Poorly managed pile burns can pose a bushfire risk and endanger lives, property and the environment. A simple check could save a lot of grief.”

It is possible for heat to be retained in stumps, large branches, or other bigger materials for months, if fire is not properly extinguished.

These piles can smoulder and then reignite in dry, windy conditions.

"Ultimately you are responsible for any fire you light and if it escapes you may be liable for the damage it causes,” Adrian said.

“All piles should be broken apart, spread out, and soaked to extinguish any smouldering material.”

Residents should always:

❗️Check local conditions and weather forecasts, including wind changes

❗️Ensure burn-offs are fully extinguished and continue monitoring piles

❗️Have a written permit to burn off grass, undergrowth, weeds or other vegetation during the FDP.
