Yesterday marked National Threatened Species Day, an important reminder that protecting local wildlife begins with protecting the habitat they rely on.

For many threatened species, trees provide essential shelter, food and movement corridors across the landscape.

Tree hollows are particularly important, offering safe nesting and refuge sites for birds, mammals and reptiles.

By planting and caring for native trees, we can all contribute to a healthier, more resilient environment for local wildlife.

Winter rain can do more of the work for your garden than you might think! 🌧️

Before reaching for the hose, take a moment to check your soil. Push your finger a few centimetres below the surface — if it feels cool or damp, your plants are likely well watered and can wait a little longer.

Turning off your irrigation after rainfall not only saves water but also helps prevent overwatering and supports healthier roots during the cooler months.

🌳 Plastic Free July: Small swaps that help our trees too!

Plastic Free July is a great reminder that the everyday choices we make can support healthier environments.

Plastic litter can end up around the base of trees, where it breaks down into microplastics. These can impact soil health, harm wildlife, and end up in our waterways.

This July, try these simple swaps:

➡️ Bring a reusable drink bottle
➡️ Choose reusable shopping bags
➡️ Skip single-use plastic
➡️ Pick up litter when you see it

Protecting trees isn’t just about planting and watering them, it’s also about caring for the spaces they grow in.

Join our National Tree Planting Day event! 🌱

🕥 10am to 11.30am
📅 Sunday 26 July
📍 Robbins Wetlands (Rita Drive off Ontario Ave, close to Sixteenth Street)
We’ll be planting 300 trees to help regenerate this important wetland, support local wildlife and enhance biodiversity in the area

🧤 Gloves, tools and buckets for watering will be provided. Drinking water and refreshments supplied.
👖 Please wear appropriate clothing including sturdy shoes and long pants
