Appreciation Post Time

Today, we’d like to recognise LT(AAC) Jakson Batchelor, a proud Adult Cadet Staff member of 311ACU for more than four years and the driving force behind Exercise Knight.

As the Unit Training Officer, Jakson invests countless hours planning, coordinating, and delivering training that challenges cadets while maintaining a safe and supportive environment. Whether he’s teaching new skills, mentoring cadets, or sharing his extensive knowledge and experience, he is always willing to go the extra mile to help others succeed.

Jakson’s journey with the Australian Army Cadets began at the ripe old age of 12 and a half in South Australia, where he progressed through the ranks to become a Cadet Under Officer. His passion for the program and commitment to youth development have continued long after his cadet days.

311ACU is incredibly fortunate to have Jakson as part of our team. His dedication, leadership, and willingness to give his time so generously have helped shape the experiences of countless cadets and contributed to developing the leaders of tomorrow.

Thank you, Jakson, for everything you do for our cadets and our unit. Your hard work does not go unnoticed.

A busy morning of learning, leadership, and practical skills for our cadets.

From leading clearing patrols and building and presenting mud models, to putting their observational skills to the test in the scrub, cadets have been challenged to think, communicate, and work as a team. They have also gained valuable experience operating within a Command Post (CP), bringing together many of the skills they have developed throughout the exercise.

RATEL, navigation, Command Post operations, and a chance to put all their newly learned skills to the test.

Not every journey was a straight line—one section became a little geographically embarrassed and required two ACS-guided course corrections—but they persevered, found their way, and successfully completed the exercise.

The day finished with a stretcher carry back to the Command Post, bringing together teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving in a challenging but rewarding field activity. Well done to all cadets involved!

Exercise Knight has commenced successfully despite the cold weather.

Cadets spent the morning developing key fieldcraft skills, including camouflage and concealment, pace counting, improvised stretcher construction, and the establishment of observation posts. They then applied these skills by constructing and occupying their own observation posts.

Preparations are in full swing for the Fourth Annual Exercise Knight!

Last night, cadets were hard at work conducting equipment checks, ensuring both their personal gear and unit field equipment are ready for a safe and successful exercise.

For many of our newest recruits, Exercise Knight will be their first opportunity to experience fieldcraft training firsthand, learning valuable skills under the guidance of experienced Cadet NCOs and Adult Cadet Staff (ACS).

The exercise also provides an important opportunity for our newly promoted NCOs to put their leadership training into practice, developing their skills while mentoring and supporting younger and less experienced cadets in a challenging field environment.

Exercise Knight continues to be a highlight of the training year, building teamwork, confidence, resilience, and leadership across the unit.

We wish all participants a safe, rewarding, and enjoyable exercise.

Here’s to another successful Exercise Knight!

The 25th of April marks a solemn day of remembrance in the Australian and New Zealand calendars. Communities across both nations gather in services and vigils to honour this significant day.

It is a time to reflect on all who answered the call to serve—to acknowledge those who gave years of service, and for many, the ultimate sacrifice, in the pursuit of freedom and the defence of our nations.

Cadets and staff of 311ACU paid their respects across the Sunraysia region this ANZAC Day, attending the dawn service in Wentworth, the morning service in Red Cliffs, and the march to Henderson Park for the afternoon service in Mildura.

We will remember them.

Lest we forget.
