Career Communication with Your Student
Top Tips for Parents & Carers

1. Start the conversation early
Career conversations don’t need to wait until Year 12. Talk regularly about interests, strengths, subjects and possible future pathways.

2. Ask, don’t tell
Instead of saying “You should be a…”, ask:
What subjects do you enjoy?
What are you good at?
What kind of work interests you?
What would you like your future to look like?

3. Focus on interests and strengths
Help your student identify what they enjoy and what they do well. These can provide valuable clues about potential careers and study pathways.

4. Keep an open mind
There are many pathways into a career, including university, TAFE, VET, apprenticeships, traineeships, further training and entering the workforce.

5. Encourage exploration
Encourage your student to research different occupations, courses and industries. Job experiences, volunteering, work experience and talking to people in different careers can also help.

6. Avoid comparing
Every student has a different journey. Avoid comparing their choices, achievements or career plans with siblings, friends or other students.

7. Let them take ownership
Your role is to guide, encourage and support—not make the decision for them. Give your student opportunities to research options and make informed choices.

8. Talk about the future without pressure
Career planning can feel overwhelming. Keep conversations positive and remind your student that career pathways can change over time.

Remember:
There is no single “right” pathway.
Talk. Explore. Encourage. Support.

Talking about career choices isn’t always easy. To make the smarter...

Making a difference in our community!

These amazing Year 9 students made a real difference by packing breakfast bags for hungry students across 10 schools on the Sunshine Coast.

We are so grateful for our partnership with Gateway Care and the opportunity to support such an important initiative.

Well done, Year 9! 👏💙

How to Apply
We encourage you to discuss this opportunity with students who may be interested in a career in healthcare.

Students should:
1. Talk it over with parents/guardians, teachers, or VET Coordinators to ensure it’s the right fit.
2. Consider transport – trainees will be expected to travel to their placement one day per week. Applications are assessed with consideration to proximity between a student’s home and their chosen facility.
3. Submit an online application form (once application open in September students can apply here School Based Traineeship Program | Sunshine Coast Health).

The form will include:
o Personal and parent/guardian details
o Why they’re applying
o Their interest in a healthcare career
o Relevant skills (from work, volunteering, sport, or hobbies)
o Online learning and a short healthcare related quiz

If students need assistance during the application process, they’re welcome to reach out to their school VET Coordinator or contact our Diversity & Inclusion team at [email protected].
