Severe weather is forecast from Saturday morning, with damaging winds and the possibility of severe thunderstorms.

💨 Strong winds may cause fallen trees, property damage and localised power outages.

NOW IS THE TIME TO PREPARE:

🔶 Secure trampolines, outdoor furniture, umbrellas and other loose items
🔶 Trim overhanging branches & clear gutters
🔶 Park vehicles away from trees
🔶 Charge your phone
🔶 Have a torch, radio and emergency kit ready
🔶 Stock up on bottled water & non-perishable food

This week, our members joined VicSES Heidelberg Unit for an additional training night, participating in a multi-unit and multi-agency storm and flood event exercise.
These training nights play a vital role in ensuring our members and partner emergency service agencies are prepared to respond effectively to a major, widespread storm event.

A big thank you to SES Heidelberg Unit for coordinating and running the exercise. We greatly appreciate the opportunity to train alongside our emergency service partners and strengthen our collective response capabilities.

A severe weather warning is in place for tomorrow (Wednesday 19 August) with predicted high winds. BOM is advising of gusts up to 90km/h across metro Melbourne areas.
If this is the first time you’re hearing this, we recommend:
1️⃣ Downloading the VicEmergency App, and setting up watch zones
2️⃣ Setting your location on the Bureau of Meteorology app

Now that you have heard, it’s time to act.

✅ Check that loose items such as outdoor furniture, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured.

✅ Park your car undercover and away from trees.

First Responders Day at Whittlesea Secondary College 🚨

Our volunteers were proud to be part of Whittlesea Secondary College’s First Responders Day, joining Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria, and the Whittlesea CFA to connect with the next generation.

It was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the important work first responders do during emergencies while sharing practical tips on how students can help prepare themselves, their families, and their local community before an emergency happens.

A huge thank you to all the students and staff at Whittlesea Secondary College for your enthusiasm, great questions, and warm welcome. It was a pleasure to spend the day with you, and we hope to see some future volunteers inspired by what they learned! 👏

Our volunteers are used to getting their hands dirty, so a tree planting day was right up their alley! 🌳

Last weekend, our SES volunteers joined the City of Whittlesea National Tree Day Planting Event, helping plant some of the 25,000 trees and wildflowers that will benefit our local environment for years to come.

Thanks to everyone who pitched in. If you missed it, there’s another chance to get involved on Sunday 26 July, 10 am–1 pm at Bunjil Nganga Parkland, Quarry Hills.

Bonus points for the coffee and sausage sizzle! 🧡

48 hours. 48+ Requests for Assistance. One incredible team at Whittlesea SES Unit. 🫶

When the wind arrived, the rain wasn’t far behind—and suddenly, our unit became the busiest in the state.

Over the last 48 hours, our amazing volunteers have responded to more than **48 Requests for Assistance**, working around the clock to help our community when it mattered most.

To every one of our volunteers who answered the call, left the comfort of home, and put our community first—thank you. Your dedication, teamwork, and commitment help keep our community safe, no matter what the weather throws our way.

Here’s to the team behind the orange. You should all be incredibly proud. 👏🧡

It’s been a busy night for VICSES volunteers responding to over 250 requests for assistance (RFAs) statewide since 3pm yesterday due to storm impacts. This includes over 160 RFAs for fallen trees. Our SES Whittlesea Unit received the most RFAs (26), followed by the SES Nillumbik Unit (18) and SES Seymour Unit (15).

As we move into Thursday morning, those in parts of Northeast and Central Victoria should stay informed about flood warnings on the VicEmergency app or website: https://emergency.vic.gov.au/respond/

Never try to enter or drive through floodwater. Plan ahead to find alternate routes which are not flooded to keep yourself and others safe.

The severe weather warning for damaging winds remains in place for parts of East Gippsland, North East and West and South Gippsland Forecast Districts. Avoid travel in these parts if possible and be mindful of fallen trees and debris when you’re out and about. Severe thunderstorms in the northwest are moving east into the northeast tonight and early tomorrow, bringing the risk of damaging winds and heavy rain that could cause flash flooding.

A Flood Watch is in place for parts of Northeast and Central Victoria, with minor to moderate flooding expected and the chance of isolated major flooding.

Heavy rainfall could also increase the risk of landslides and debris flows in areas affected by fires earlier this year, so it is important to stay alert. If you need emergency assistance, contact VICSES on 132 500.

With school holidays underway, please take extra care around rivers, creeks and lakes, as water levels can rise quickly without warning. If you are travelling or camping, avoid setting up near trees, branches or low lying areas close to waterways.

If conditions become dangerous, it is safest to stay indoors. If you are driving and conditions worsen, pull over safely away from drains, trees and floodwater.

Stay informed by using the VicEmergency app and setting a watch zone for your local area or anywhere you plan to travel.

If you hadn’t noticed, it’s been a bit blowy out there this arvo! 🌬️

Since 5pm, our volunteers have responded to more than 30 requests for assistance from across the community, and they’re still out and about working their way through every branch, limb and tree that’s come down.

A huge thank you to everyone for your patience while our crews work through the jobs as quickly and safely as possible.
