And so it begins....Greenworks Contractors are very proud to have the opportunity to deliver this fantastic project in association with Melbourne Water and the many relevant stakeholders. All who have worked tirelessly to finally see this re-imagining project come to fruition. Works commenced this week to remove the concrete from the Moonee Ponds Creek and return it to its former identity as a natural, meandering waterway.

Workers spent the week breaking up and removing 50 metres of concrete panelling along the sides of the Moonee Ponds Creek in Strathmore, the first step in a decades-old bid to restore the waterway to its original state.

The Pillars Road Fishway project constructed by Greenworks Contractors for Melbourne Water has been nominated for the Innovation in Waterway Management award at the upcoming River Basin Management Society Gala Awards.

A bit of "before and after".
Greenworks conducted a reimagining project for Melbourne Water at Hadfield Park in Wallan earlier this year. A recent visit confirms the native vegetation is establishing and the transformation from drain to naturalised waterway is well underway.
Photo 1 shows the original eroded overland flow path above the previous underground drainage line.

Attached is a timelapse from the Dandenong Creek fishway constructed by Greenworks for Melbourne Water. A second rock fishway was also constructed by Greenworks downstream of this site to assist fish migration. This structure enables fish to access a section of the waterway previously impassable due to a 2 metre plus high obstruction. Native fish which were once abundant in Dandenong Creek, have been impacted by in-stream structures, becoming restricted in numbers or locally extinct.

Early monitoring results from late 2021 indicate that the cone fishway is already helping fish to move upstream. Fish caught above the fishway include Common Galaxias, Spotted Galaxias, Lamprey and surprisingly, nine juvenile Australian Grayling! Excitingly, very small young-of-year Australian Grayling, a nationally threatened species, have already been captured at the top of the fishway. It’s believed the last record of this species in the Dandenong Creek system was almost 40 years ago!

Well done to Grace and Liam for successfully transitioning our OH&S accreditation from AS4801 to the updated ISO 45001 in our recent annual audit.
At the same time obtaining ISO 9001 Quality Management accreditation and ISO 14001 Quality Management.

Whilst it's important to recognise the great outcomes being achieved out in the field, achievements like triple certification also provide significant value and certainty to our contract partners and should be duly celebrated.

Yarra River, Launching Place.

Greenworks recently constructed another access point on the Yarra River for Melbourne Water Project Manager, Toufeek Edross.
These structures provide improved community access to our waterways and formalised entry points which prevent erosion and improve public safety.
Not only that, they are aesthetically enhancing as well.
Well done to Mark and his crew on construction of another fantastic community asset.
