The Maltese Community Council of Victoria (MCCV) was honoured to host a farewell reception for Fr. Tarcisio Micallef MSSP at the Maltese Centre in Parkville.

MCCV President Mrs Antonia Camilleri warmly welcomed guests and paid tribute to Fr. Tarcisio’s remarkable journey and his many years of dedicated service to the Maltese community.

The gathering also heard heartfelt words from Dr Gioconda Schembri, Consul General for Malta in Victoria; Fr. Silvio Bezzina MSSP, Provincial of the Australian Region; Fr. Lonnie Borg MSSP; and Fr. Edwin Agius MSSP, before Fr. Tarcisio shared a few words of his own.

Fr. Tarcisio has made an enduring contribution to Maltese communities in Australia through his many years of service, guidance and commitment. His passion and dedication also played an important role in the establishment of the Ċentru Malti in Parkville, helping it become the vibrant home of the Maltese community that it is today.

MCCV extends its sincere gratitude to Fr. Tarcisio for his invaluable contribution and wishes him every blessing and happiness for the journey ahead.

Father’s Day is an important opportunity to pause and recognise the fathers who have helped build strong, loving families through their dedication, guidance and sacrifice.

Fathers play a powerful role in teaching resilience, kindness, responsibility and love. Their influence is seen not only in the families they raise, but also in the legacy they leave for future generations. Often, their quiet sacrifices and steady presence become the foundation of a happy and successful family life.

Today, we say thank you to all fathers, grandfathers, father figures and mentors who have raised great families with strength, patience and care. You are appreciated, respected and celebrated. Happy Father’s Day.

Fr Tarcisio Micallef will be retiring after more than 50 years of service to the Maltese community in Australia.

On Saturday, 5 September, we will celebrate with Fr Tarcisio at the Maltese Community Centre in Parkville. The event will commence with a Mass service, followed by a farewel party at the centre. Entry is $20 per person.

We encourage members of the Maltese community to attend, celebrate this special occasion, and thank Fr Tarcisio for all he has accomplished through his ministry.

Event Details

The 84th anniversary commemoration of Operation Pedestal, the historic World War II Santa Marija Convoy to Malta, will be held on Sunday, 9 August 2026, from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm.

The ceremony will take place at the Second World War Memorial Forecourt and Sanctuary of the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne, Victoria.

Historical Background

Launched in August 1942, Operation Pedestal was a major British naval convoy sent to break the Axis siege of Malta. The convoy included 14 merchant ships supported by 59 warships, carrying desperately needed food, medical supplies, and fuel to the besieged island.

The Turning Point

Although nine merchant ships were lost and hundreds of lives were taken, the heavily damaged tanker SS Ohio reached Grand Harbour on 15 August 1942, coinciding with the Feast of Santa Marija.

Strategic Significance

The arrival of fuel and supplies helped prevent Malta from surrendering and enabled the island to remain a vital Allied base for the remainder of the Second World War.
