Monash Children’s Hospital is also the Victorian Referral Centre for many low-volume and high-complex cases. Our services are linked to an adult service, allowing us to provide transition-of-care as children grow older and move to an adult service. We deliver specialised, innovative, family-centred care and believe strongly in putting patients first and striving for exceptional care and outstanding outcomes.

New dad Liam Grant wasn't expecting to celebrate his first Father's Day this year 👶💙

Baby Jude was born premature at 28 weeks gestation and has spent 4 weeks in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Monash Children's Hospital (MCH).

'It was pretty whirlwind,' said Liam.

‘I haven't had a chance to overthink it. But it's really exciting.'

While Liam may not have been planning to celebrate Father's Day at this point, or celebrate it in the NICU, his partner Ruby Reilley said fatherhood has come naturally to him.

'He's so excited and he's been as hands-on as he can be. Does all the nappies that he can and gets involved in the feeds,' said Ruby.

Jude's been busy growing and resting in the NICU, but he still somehow had time to get his dad a Father's Day present!

'Jude's got a present for Liam,' Ruby joked. 'So organised already at 4 weeks old.'

Now 32 weeks adjusted age, Jude is doing well and will hopefully be home with his parents in a few months.

'Every nurse and doctor has been really good,' Ruby said.

'We feel really supported. It feels like we have a village here. We feel very grateful.'

Congratulations to Liam and Ruby on becoming parents. We wish you every happiness 💙

Today, we celebrate fathers everywhere. We extend our thanks to the dads in our teams who balance family life with work.

We also acknowledge that Father's Day can be a difficult time for many people. For those who have experienced loss, faced struggles with conception, or are missing their fathers today, we hold you in our thoughts.

📣 Important update for families and carers using disability permit parking at Monash Children’s Hospital.

Due to essential works, we’re sorry to advise that disability permit parking bays in the Monash Children’s Hospital drop-off area will be temporarily unavailable from:

👉 7 September to 16 September
👉 29 September to 8 October

We know that close, accessible parking is particularly important for many children with disability and their families and carers, and we apologise for the additional difficulty this temporary change may cause.

The closure is required while essential electrical works are completed beneath the disability parking area.

During these periods, disability parking permit holders can park in the Monash Medical Centre multi-deck car park, accessed via Clayton Road. Additional disability parking bays will be available, with extra signage and pedestrian support in place to help families reach Monash Children’s Hospital safely.

An accessible route through Monash Medical Centre connects the multi-deck car park with Monash Children’s Hospital.

Books, costumes, butterflies, and music filled Monash Children’s Hospital as patients, families and staff came together to celebrate Children’s Book Week 📚🦋🎶

Inspired by this year’s theme, 'Symphony of Stories', the day featured craft activities based on books shortlisted for the Book of the Year Awards, a live butterfly enclosure, book readings and face painting.

'Book Week is a very special week, it’s inspiring. Books are empowering, they’re magical,' said Colin Dobson, Principal of Monash Children’s Hospital School.

There were free books and costumes for children, thanks to the support of the Monash Health Foundation.

Year 12 music student Myah Jaide Armour also led a nursery rhyme sing-along and performed songs from Disney musicals with her guitar 🎸

'We believe that children who are in hospital shouldn’t miss out on Book Week. So, we offer this as a special week on all the wards and in the foyer,' shared Colin ✨💙

Sixteen years after spending more than a year in Monash Children’s Hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), Tobey Mitchell returned — this time for work experience alongside the team who helped save his life 💙

Born at 28 weeks gestation, Tobey spent the first 407 days of his life in the NICU.

As reported by 9News, Tobey is now exploring a future caring for others.

'To get him back to do work experience with us in this setting, in which we looked after him for a long time, was really, I think, very overwhelming for everyone,’ shared neonatologist Professor Atul Malhotra.

As part of his placement, Tobey shared his story with staff in a moving presentation.

‘To all the doctors and nurses, you are amazing. And I wouldn’t have recovered the way I did without you,’ said Tobey.

Tobey’s return to Monash Children’s Hospital was a special moment for the team, his family, and everyone who has followed his journey 🌟

Serving smiles at Monash Children’s Hospital 🎾

Our young patients had a ball this week with a special visit from Tennis Australia, bringing games, fun and plenty of feel-good moments to the hospital foyer.

A big thank you to Tennis Australia and the Australian Tennis Foundation for helping brighten the day for children and families spending time in hospital 💙

The Monash Children's Clinical Trials Centre believes every child deserves to feel safe and as comfortable as possible while receiving care 👶💙

Over the past few years, the centre has introduced several measures to reduce the distress of blood tests and procedures for children involved in clinical trials, including:

☑️dedicated research nurses with deep procedural experience

☑️a child-friendly space with pictures on the walls and an open, welcoming environment

☑️light procedural sedation (including nitrous oxide)

☑️and AccuVein, a near-infrared device that maps veins onto the skin for easier, less painful venepuncture.

Routine procedures required to safely deliver new therapies can be a greater barrier in paediatrics, particularly to young children or those who find communication and understanding more difficult, including autistic children or those with intellectual disability.

In 2025, around 45% of our 55 trial participants were neurodivergent children. These measures have made a real difference to their experience and to their families🌟

Our young patients scored a special visit from the Hawks! 💛🤎

A big thank you to Hawthorn Football Club players Mabior Chol and Ned Reeves who stopped by Monash Children’s Hospital to meet children and their families.

The pair signed autographs, gifted merchandise and surprised footy fans on the wards.

Special visits like this through the Monash Health Foundation mean so much to our young patients, their families and our care teams.

A huge congratulations to our lucky prize winner, Solomon, who recently collected the keys to his brand-new BMW with his wife, Sujaya 🔑

Solomon leads our IT Service Desk team 💻 and has been a dedicated member of the Monash Health team for over 10 years.

‘When I received the winning call late at night, I thought I was dreaming!’ said Solomon.

‘Since collecting the car, I have already enjoyed driving it with my family and even taken it to the office.’

⚠️ Button batteries pose a serious risk to small children.

If swallowed, they can burn through a child’s food pipe in just two hours, causing internal injuries, life-threatening bleeding or death.

🚨 If you think a child has swallowed a button battery, immediately take them to the nearest hospital Emergency department.

‘If you have a suspicion, any concern, that your child may have swallowed a button battery, you take that kid to Emergency,’ paediatric gastroenterologist at Monash Children’s Hospital, Dr Rupert Hinds, told 3AW.

You can help keep children safe by:

🔒 checking that battery compartments on toys and electronic devices are childproof

🚫 not letting children play with batteries

📦 and storing batteries out of reach of children
