Despite delivering an ambitious federal budget that includes structural reform of the tax system, Labor managed to include key measures aimed at enlisting science and research in the ongoing task to lift Australia’s economic productivity.

There was extra funding for CSIRO, Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP), National Measurement Institute (NMI), National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), Australian Space Agency (ASA), Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) and the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) radio astronomy facility.

The Federal Government will provide CSIRO with an extra $387.4 million over the next four years. CSIRO has been the focus of significant upheaval with hundreds of jobs made redundant.

The new funding allocation will not reverse the decisions made to slash jobs, but pressure is now on the agency to ensure there are no further losses... CPSU - Community and Public Sector Union

There’s no doubt that news of an extra $387.4 million in CSIRO funding is a welcome development. Two weeks ago, our union called for significant additional and ongoing support for the CSIRO... and the Albanese Labor Government has now answered that call CPSU - Community and Public Sector Union

The future is uncertain, as the CSIRO works through the agonising process of axing 350 roles nationally, on top of 800 already cut in recent years.

"It does feel like a bit of a slap in the face, after many years of dedicating long hours and hard work," Angie says.

"They're not saying we haven't done our jobs well, they we're not performing ... But it feels like you're definitely not valued."
