Why are councils and communities covering climate costs while big coal, oil and gas companies profit?

SPAN is supporting Darebin City Council´s call for a Climate Compensation Fund funded by major fossil fuel exporters - not ratepayers - that could support:

- Disaster response and preparedness
- Insurance relief for disaster-hit communities
- Flood-proofed homes
- Upgraded community halls and evacuation centres
- Shaded streets and cool public spaces
- Well-resourced emergency services
- An Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Climate Self-Determination Fund
- Support for a just transition for workers and their families

Darebin Climate Action Now 's volunteers have already collected nearly 100 signatures and are out in our streets, markets and parks talking with residents about making polluters pay. Add your voice - sign the petition today.

We all have so much to learn and share here at SPAN. Last week, one of our new volunteers taught an eager group of community members, including some of our Make & Mend group’s sewers, how to make pork and cabbage dumplings. “Hao chi!” (Delicious!) 🥟

With thanks to Community Bank Clifton Hill-North Fitzroy who are supporting us to explore different ways our community can share a meal together.

Yesterday, I was proud to pass an amendment supporting longer-term certainty for our neighbourhood houses across Darebin and it passed unanimously.

This motion delivers: 🏡 A 4-year lease agreement, with the option of an additional 4 years through a council resolution.

That means up to 8 years of stability and security for the incredible organisations that bring people together, support vulnerable residents, create connection, and strengthen our community every single day.

Neighbourhood houses are the heart of Darebin, and they deserve long-term support to continue their amazing work Neighbourhood Houses Victoria Span Community House Reservoir Neighbourhood House Jika Jika Community Centre Alphington Community Centre Bridge Darebin Prace

This National Reconciliation Week, we’re taking a moment to reflect on what we’ve learned so far, and where we go next.

Reconciliation isn’t a one-time action. It’s about showing up, listening, learning, and continuing to build stronger relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people; challenging our own beliefs, sitting in discomfort, and knowing there is always more to learn.

SPAN is committed to staying curious, backing our values with action, and finding ways, big and small, to support reconciliation in our community.

We’re all in, every day. 🖤💛❤️

This National Volunteer Week, we want to say thank you to YOU!
Not just to our volunteers, but to everyone who is part of Span.
Because here, those were never really two separate groups.

The person leading a class leans on someone else's kindness to get through their own week. The person who first came through our door looking for support often ends up offering it to whoever arrives next.

That's not a flaw in how Span works. It's the whole point of it.

Whether you came here to give something or to find something ... and most of us, over time, do both ... you are what holds this place together.

You are a helper. And whenever you need it, you can be helped. That is what Span is here for.

Thank you, this week and every week. We're so glad you're here.
