Spending time with your loved ones doesn’t mean you have to spend money. What matters most is making precious memories.

1 in 3 Australians experience loneliness. Loneliness doesn’t just mean being isolated, you can feel lonely around people if your social needs aren’t being met. It can have significant impacts on your physical health.

An important way to combat this is to spend intentional time with those you care about.

Catch up with your family or friends this weekend and try out these free and easy ideas:
1. Do art together
No matter your skill level, doing art together is a fun way to de-stress and catch up with people. You could draw, paint, do origami or just craft something with stuff you have at home.

2. Visit a park
Getting some fresh air in a new or well-loved park gives you a chance to walk and talk. If you wanted something more to do you could bring a game or some cards and just play.

3. Visit a FREE art gallery
Many art galleries have free entry. In Melbourne these galleries host free exhibitions: NGV International, ACMI, Craft Victoria, Tolarno Galleries, Art and Heritage Collection Tour and more.

4. Check out local events
No matter your interests, people host free events ranging from nature walks to festivals to hobby groups and exhibitions.

National Reconciliation Week begins today, we would like to acknowledge all First Nations people and continue to support community involvement in the next steps of Australia’s reconciliation journey.

This year’s theme, All In, is a reminder that reconciliation is a reminder for all of us to listen, learn, and take meaningful action every day. We remain committed to supporting stronger relationships, respect, and shared responsibility.

Around 1 in 100 Australians live with schizophrenia, with symptoms often more commonly experienced by men than women.

This Schizophrenia Awareness Week, we’re shining a light on the power of peer support, how it can make a meaningful difference by creating a safe, non-judgmental space where people feel heard, understood, and supported by others with similar experiences.

Our Free Hearing Voices Support Group offers a supportive community where people can share experiences openly and feel empowered through connection and peer understanding: https://supportgroup.mhfa.org.au/hearing-voices-support-group

Trying one of these strange but effective grounding techniques can be just the sensory shock you need to break out of your daily routines.

If you find that you struggle to do usual mindfulness activities, sensory shocks might be just what you need. Instead of trying to calm yourself by noticing the world around you, force yourself to focus your energy on the present moment.

Sometimes we work so hard just to get by that we can forget to take a moment to smell the roses. It is so essential to remember to stop and appreciate even the small things in our daily lives.

Being grounded means that you are the one in control of your actions, instead of letting your emotions control you.

On 1st of October, Danny will set off from Sydney on foot, running 1,113km to Melbourne over 19 consecutive days to raise vital funds for the Mental Health Foundation Australia. Averaging 58.6km per day across 30,150m of total elevation, which is three times more than his previous challenge from London to Paris.

“Australia welcomed me with open arms this year. As a gratitude, the run will be an attempt to raise $1,000,000 for the Mental Health Foundation Australia, so more people can get the support they need.” — Danny Ovens

More than 3,300 Australians lose their lives to su***de every year. Million Australians experience mental health concerns each year. The Mental Health Foundation Australia is here to bridge the gap, providing affordable mental health support services to those in need.

When facing anxious thoughts, your mind can quickly flip to unhealthy resolutions.

It is natural to want to escape an uncomfortable situation. Anxiety is a survival mechanism, meaning that it triggers our fight or flight response when facing perceived threats.

This is helpful when we are in a situation when we need an immediate response, but it becomes counterproductive when it gets activated in a non-emergency situation.

When facing anxiety, it is important to reflect on what you are feeling and address that it is an anxious response. Once you have understood that it is not an immediate danger, then a great solution is to find a way to step back from the situation so that you can respond to the challenge with a better headspace.

These simple methods allow us to take a break and gives us time to find better solutions.

When we are in an anxious state our mind can push us to do something that isn’t in our best interests.

Calming anxious thoughts can feel challenging at the start but over time, by creating a routine response, we can rewire the brain and how it responds to perceived threats.

The Federal budget was released on Tuesday this week. Early intervention mental health support has been overlooked.

Properly investing in early intervention would lower our dependence on emergency services that are already overwhelmed.

At the Wellness Hub we offer $30 counselling for anyone who needs proactive support. Click the Link in Bio to book an appointment.

Happy International Nurses Day. We should celebrate and appreciate these crucial workers who look out for those most in need.

Importantly, we should focus on addressing the challenges of being a nurse. The long shifts and a stressful workload make nurses susceptible to burnout and exhaustion.

Some important ways to manage burnout include:
• Being aware of the early warning signs such as feeling overworked and feeling constantly tired.
• Getting enough rest even if that means having to talk to your supervisor.
• Eating nutritious and fulfilling meals.
• Exercising
• Unloading the intense emotional events that happen at work.

Some further resources:
The Australian Nurse and Midwife Health Program offers a free peer support program and Telehealth for nurses. Read more about it here: https://www.health.gov.au/ministers/the-hon-ged-kearney-mp/media/nurses-and-midwives-get-lifeline-new-program-tackles-burnout-head-on?language=en

We also run free support groups for nurses navigating Bipolar, Anxiety, Trauma and PTSD, Coercive Control and more, can be found here: https://supportgroup.mhfa.org.au/calendar

If you need further help preventing burnout, you can book a session with our provisional counsellors. https://wellnesshub.mhfa.org.au/
