Yesterday, Georgie Purcell - Animal Justice Party MP secured a major win for koalas.

She moved a motion calling for the government to release 'The Status of Victoria's Koala Population', a report completed after an $850,000 study into koalas across our state.

This document had been sitting on a shelf since June 2025. And just minutes before Georgie was due to speak in Parliament, the government released the report.

Not only that – they announced a $2.6million commitment to koala research and welfare.

This is not a coincidence. It's the result of relentless advocacy, of Georgie speaking on koala protection more than 20 seperate times since being elected: including six times to deplore the aerial shooting of koalas in Budj Bim.

The report's findings confirm what we've been saying for years: while an estimated 217,000–225,000 koalas remain in Victoria, some populations have dangerously low genetic diversity, and koalas need urgent action on welfare, genetic management and statewide monitoring.

Today is a huge step forward. But it can't be the end. Without continued pressure, Victoria risks becoming yet another state where koalas are listed as endangered – and once that happens, there's no turning back.

Close the loopholes. Protect our forests. Protect our wildlife.

Victoria officially ended commercial native forest logging in 2024. But trees are still being cut down and removed under the guise of fuel management, bushfire prevention, hazardous tree removal and storm recovery.

Georgie is taking this issue to Parliament and demanding answers from the Victorian Government.

Victoria's kangaroos are under attack, and it's happening in more places than you'd think.

📍 Westmeadows - residents are reporting kangaroos being shot late at night, right near their homes.

📍 Leneva Valley - development is swallowing up kangaroo habitat, pushing local mobs into smaller and smaller spaces.

📍 East Gippsland - community advocates are fighting to save beloved local mobs from being killed under government-approved plans.

At the same time, Victoria still allows kangaroos to be commercially killed for meat and skins: up to 95,450 of them in 2026 alone. Yarra Ranges and Mount Alexander councils have already called for this to stop. It's time the state government listened.

Kangaroos aren't pests to be moved on, hidden away, or shot. They're native wildlife, and they deserve to be treated like it.

We are sad to report that two-year-old Paw Otis became the 21st greyhound to die on a Victorian racetrack this year.

The race was held in support of Tasmania’s greyhound racing industry under the banner “We Stand With Tasmania.”

But Paw Otis’s death shows exactly why this industry should not be defended.

A young dog lost his life at an event designed to support the continuation of greyhound racing. Tasmania is moving towards ending this cruel industry, while Victoria continues allowing dogs to be injured and killed on its tracks.

Rest in peace, Paw Otis. You deserved a safe and happy life.

New Zealand’s decision to end greyhound racing is a major victory for dogs and proof that this cruel industry can be stopped.

Now, every greyhound affected deserves a safe and happy retirement.

Around 140 greyhounds have reportedly arrived in Queensland to continue racing, with some expected to be moved interstate. But the end of racing in New Zealand should mean freedom from the industry, not a transfer to another racetrack.

We are urging Greyhound Racing Victoria not to accept any of these dogs into Victoria’s racing industry. Every greyhound deserves freedom from racing and the opportunity to live out their life as a loved companion, not to be sent to another racetrack.

Millie should have been safe. Instead, she was trapped and repeatedly beaten after wandering onto a neighbouring property.

Her attacker was initially sentenced to two months in jail, but that sentence was overturned on appeal and replaced with a community correction order.

Millie was failed by Victoria’s outdated animal cruelty laws. And unless those laws change, other animals will continue to be failed too.

A new Animal Care and Protection Bill would strengthen penalties for animal cruelty and recognise animals as sentient beings who experience pain, fear and suffering.

The Victorian Government promised these reforms a decade ago. Now, with only a handful of parliamentary sitting weeks remaining before the election, time is running out to get this Bill back on the agenda.

For Millie, and every victim before her.

This is what a dedicated voice for animals looks like.

Georgie Purcell stood up in Parliament and did what she's done for years: demanded the government finally introduce the Animal Care and Protection Bill – the law that would replace Victoria's 40-year-old animal cruelty laws.

For the first time in a long time, the government didn't say no.

There are only a few sitting weeks of Parliament left before the November election. If we don't keep the pressure on right now, this reform could be shelved again – just like it was under the last Premier.
