Thanks DEECA Loddon Mallee, who wrote: Yesterday St Killian’s Primary School were one of 12 local primary schools to participate in the Hope and Action Day at the Garden for the Future in Bendigo. Students enjoyed a Welcome to Country, an environmental performance and three sustainability themed hands-on workshops delivered by local organisations. The day provided students with knowledge and practical actions that reduce resource use and support local biodiversity, water and land. Teachers were introduced to the many organisations that provide free incursions or resources to local schools. A huge thank you to all the teachers, students and organisation that came together to make this a wonderful and memorable event.

Whether you keep cockatiels, budgies, or other pet birds, good biosecurity is one of the best ways to protect them from H5 bird flu.

While there are currently no detections in Victoria, there are simple actions you can take to keep your birds free from disease.

Here's what to keep in mind.
✅ Keep feed and water away from wild birds
✅ Prevent contact between your birds and wild birds or their droppings
✅ Keep aviaries, cages and outdoor enclosures clean and secure
✅ Wear clean footwear and wash your hands before and after handling birds

If you notice something unusual, talk to your local vet or call the Emergency Animal Disease hotline on 1800 675 888.

A great example of a ResourceSmart School in action saving precious water supplies and money 💙

A hidden leak can waste thousands of litres of water and cost schools hundreds of dollars every week!

That's why we're inviting schools to join the Schools Water Efficiency Program (SWEP).

It’s free for schools to join, and participants save an average of $1,500 on water bills a year.

Earlier this year, Lowanna College detected a major leak through the program. If it had gone unnoticed, it could have wasted more than 21,600 litres of water every day and cost the school up to $611 a week.

Fabulous art and science project Taradale Primary School

❄️ Ice sculptures at the school gate! Parent David and students from Taradale Primary School took advantage of a literally freezing morning to create these ephemeral frozen works of art. Flowers and leaves were laid in bin lids and pans. Wet string was laid through the centre of each dish before slowly filling them with water. They were left overnight, then hung near the gate the next morning – causing a LOT of excitement for students and parents as they arrived at school!

🧊 Happy first day of Winter, kitchen gardeners! Here’s to crisp air, muddy boots and hearty soups.
