The United States and Australia have worked side-by-side every single day for a century. But sometimes, we find stories of our steadfast relationship that go back even further.
Melbourne Consul General Colin Crosby was honored to return Sergeant Harry Blake-Lane’s campaign service medal from the American Civil War to his Australian family descendants – 160 years after the war – in a ceremony at Brighton Cemetery.
Sergeant Blake-Lane served as part of the 25th New York Cavalry during the war, and after emigrated to Australia where he got married and built a successful life in Victoria. His family also received the RHSA silver medal that he was awarded for bravery in 1886 when he saved his friend from drowning, as well as his personal bible from his time as a soldier. Several descendant family members of the Blake-Lane family went on to distinguished service in the Australian military.
We were honored to commemorate his service to both the United States and Australia, recognizing one of the many U.S. and Australian defense personnel who have served shoulder-to-shoulder for generations.
