Meet Amina: Our Bilingual Support Worker Bridging Cultures. South East Melbourne is one of the most culturally diverse regions in Victoria, and quality disability support must reflect that. Amina joined Altruistic Care Services as a bilingual support worker fluent in English and Swahili with lived experience of navigating services as a migrant. She supports participants and families who feel more comfortable speaking in their first language, helping them understand NDIS processes, appointments and everyday information in a way that respects culture and faith. Her work shows up in small but powerful ways – explaining care routines to elders in language, supporting women who prefer a female worker from a similar background and helping families communicate more confidently with other professionals. Amina embodies our commitment to culturally responsive practice. For support coordinators working with culturally and linguistically diverse participants, we welcome referrals where language and cultural safety are important.

CONFUSED ABOUT SIL (SUPPORTED INDEPENDENT LIVING)? 🏠💜 You are not alone – it is one of the most complex parts of the NDIS. SIL funds the support you need with daily living in a shared or individual home when your support needs are high. It can include help with cooking, cleaning, personal care, medication prompts and developing independent-living skills. SIL does not pay your rent, groceries or regular bills, and it is not the right fit for everyone. Some people do better with drop-in support or other community-based options. When we help families think about SIL we look at the person’s current skills, safety, what they want their week to look like and how much informal support family and friends can realistically provide. We then work with support coordinators and other providers to explore options and plan for a smooth transition. To the carers reading this – this one is for you 💜 Many mums, dads, siblings and partners provide support around the clock and rarely get a proper break. Over time that level of responsibility can be exhausting. Respite is not selfish; it is essential. Our team offers in-home support, community access days and short-term respite options so you can rest, attend your own appointments or simply have a few hours where you are not “on duty” while your loved one is supported in a safe, familiar way. We take time to learn routines, communication styles and preferences so that both the participant and carer feel confident. IS YOUR NDIS PLAN REVIEW COMING UP? 📋💜 Reviews can feel stressful, but being prepared makes all the difference. About 12 weeks before your review start collecting progress notes and reports from all providers, write down what has improved, what is still hard and which supports you could not access because of limited funding. Around 8 weeks out gather strong evidence – medical or therapy reports, functional assessments, school or work reports and detailed support worker observations. Four weeks before the meeting practise answering key questions: Why do you need more hours? What progress have you made this plan? What will change if funding increases? Use specific examples rather than general statements. At the meeting bring organised paperwork, let your support coordinator help translate your needs into NDIS language, and stay calm and factual even if you feel nervous. Ask for an early review if your situation has changed significantly, your funding runs out early, there are safety concerns or you are going through a big life transition. Our team prepares detailed progress reports designed especially for plan reviews, making it easier for planners to see why supports are reasonable and necessary. Weekend Reflection: The Small Moments That Remind Us Why This Work Matters. At the end of the week we like to pause and look back at the real-life moments that never appear in service agreements but show us that quality support is working. This week Maria used the self-checkout at Woolworths independently for the first time after months of gently building confidence with her support worker Sophie; James woke early and booked his own adaptive kayaking session without prompting, then proudly messaged Marcus to share the news; Ahmed invited his family to a dinner he cooked himself, turning his home from a place of care into a place of hospitality; and Sarah stayed after her art class to help the instructor clean up and was asked if she would consider mentoring new participants next term. These are not just tasks ticked off a list – they are signs of growing independence, confidence and community connection. To support coordinators who trust us with referrals, to our team who bring patience and creativity every day, and to participants and families who allow us to walk alongside them, thank you. We wish everyone a restful weekend and look forward to more small victories that add up to big changes.

LET’S TALK ABOUT GOALS! 🎯💜 Many NDIS plans include goals like “improve social skills” or “be more independent,” but those are too vague to actually help you achieve what you want. We prefer to use SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound. Instead of “improve social skills,” a SMART version might be: “Within 6 months attend a weekly art class at Dandenong Library, stay for the full 90-minute session and start a conversation with at least one person each week.” Rather than “use public transport,” try: “By March travel independently from Dandenong to Berwick TAFE twice a week using train and bus, including buying myki and using the PTV app.” Big dreams like “live independently” are broken into smaller steps such as managing household tasks, personal care routines, medications, grocery shopping and cooking before moving into supported or independent living. Building Our Accessible South East Melbourne Directory: A Community Resource. One of the most frequent questions we receive from participants and support coordinators is: “Which local venues are genuinely accessible?” While many businesses claim accessibility, the reality often does not match the promise. At Altruistic Care Services we have spent the past year systematically visiting and assessing venues across Dandenong, Casey, Cardinia and surrounding areas so participants, families and support workers can plan community activities with confidence. Our current directory highlights truly accessible cafes and restaurants, including The Garden Cafe in Dandenong with level entry, automatic doors, an accessible bathroom with adult change table, spacious table layout, large-print menus and sensory-friendly environment, and Riverside Bistro in Casey with accessible parking, wide aisles, height-adjustable tables and an accessible outdoor seating area. We have also mapped accessible community spaces such as Dandenong Library (fully accessible entrance and facilities, assistive technology, quiet rooms and inclusive programs) and Casey RACE with pool hoist, accessible change rooms, adaptive equipment and sensory-friendly swimming sessions. Shopping centres like Parkmore in Keysborough offer multiple accessible entries, accessible bathrooms on every level, quiet hour on Tuesday mornings and widespread Companion Card acceptance. When we assess venues we look at physical access, sensory environment, staff awareness and attitude, communication accessibility and emergency egress. Support coordinators use this directory to reduce anxiety about unknown venues, plan meaningful outings and build participant confidence through successful community experiences. We are continuously updating the guide and welcome recommendations of excellent accessible businesses across South East Melbourne.
