💛 R U OK? Day 2026 💛

Today, we recognised R U OK? Day across Silky Oaks, with morning tea provided at both our locations and our Op Shop for our wonderful staff and volunteers to enjoy throughout the day. 💛

R U OK? Day is a National Day of Action that reminds us to check in with the people around us and ask a simple but powerful question: “Are you OK?”

It's a lovely opportunity to pause, enjoy a cuppa and a little something together, while reflecting on the importance of connection, meaningful conversations and looking out for one another.

As a community organisation, we know the difference that genuine connection and support can make. And while R U OK? Day is a great reminder, checking in, listening and being there for each other is something we can do every day.

So, let’s keep the conversation going. Ask the question, listen, and let someone know you’re there. 💛

Remembering Dr Bronwyn Herbert OAM | 1933 - 2026

Last week, members of the Silky Oaks Board and leadership team joined Bronwyn Herbert’s family and friends to celebrate the life of a remarkable woman whose connection with Silky Oaks spanned many decades.

Bronwyn was a social worker, leader, mentor and passionate advocate for people experiencing disadvantage. During her many years with Silky Oaks, she worked extensively within our Family Care and Support Program and later held management responsibilities across our Therapy and Out of Home Care programs, including serving as Community Programs Manager. Those who worked alongside Bronwyn remember someone who went well beyond the requirements of her role, supportive, encouraging, compassionate and deeply committed to improving the lives of others.

At the heart of Bronwyn’s life was her Christian faith. Her love for Jesus Christ shaped how she saw and served others, particularly those experiencing disadvantage, and prayer remained an important part of her life. She sought to live out her faith through service to others and, in doing so, leaves an example that continues to challenge and inspire us.

Remarkably, Bronwyn worked with Silky Oaks until the age of 81 before turning her attention to completing a PhD examining homelessness, which she received at 90. Her contribution was also recognised with the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM).

We honour Bronwyn with enormous gratitude and extend our love and condolences to the Herbert and Mercer families.

💙 HALFWAY TO 1000 ACTS OF KINDNESS 💙

What a fabulous effort from Manly West State School community! They have officially reached the halfway mark, with over 500 items donated to the Silky Oaks Community Pantry.

A huge congratulations to the school for participating in such a wonderful opportunity to teach the kids the importance of kindness, generosity and giving back to their community!

This week marks National Homelessness Week, a time to raise awareness of the growing issue of homelessness in Australia and the importance of working together to create lasting change.

For decades Silky Oaks Children's Haven has walked alongside individuals and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of losing their home, providing support, hope and practical pathways towards a brighter future.

Today, we recognise and thank our incredible Family Care and Support team. Every day, they work with compassion and dedication to help people navigate some of life's toughest moments. Through advocacy, information, referrals and personalised support, they assist people to access emergency accommodation, prevent homelessness, secure stable housing and build a foundation for a more secure future.

This National Homelessness Week, we stand with those experiencing homelessness, celebrate those making a difference, and reaffirm our commitment to supporting our community every step of the way.

💙 Together, we can help create a future where everyone has a place to call home.
