‼️🛴New laws for e-scooters & e-bikes are now in effect ‼️

Tougher Queensland laws for e-scooters, e-bikes and other Personal Mobility Devices (PMDs) came into effect on July 1, 2026, with a strong focus on improving safety for everyone who uses our footpaths, shared paths and public spaces 🚶‍♀️‍➡️👨‍🦼‍➡️

These changes are designed to help reduce injuries and make our community safer. In Mackay alone, 107 people presented to emergency departments last year following incidents involving personal mobility devices. 😲

Key changes:
✅ 12km/h speed limit on all footpaths, when passing pedestrians on shared paths.
✅ New fines for parking e-scooters and e-bikes in a way that obstructs or creates a hazard.
✅ Random breath testing for riders, with a 0.05 BAC limit.
✅ Increased penalties for offences including speeding, careless riding and not wearing a helmet.
✅ Police can seize and destroy illegal devices.
✅ Devices capable of travelling faster than 25km/h are prohibited.

Remember, footpaths are shared spaces. Slowing down around pedestrians and parking responsibly helps keep pathways safe and accessible for everyone, including children, older residents and people using mobility aids.

New e-mobility laws take effect from today.

We're cracking down on illegal and high-powered e-bikes and e-scooters, whose dangerous behaviour on roads and footpaths puts our community at risk.

The stronger laws that come into effect today 1 July, include:
🔹Police powers to seize and destroy illegal devices
🔹Police powers to conduct random breath tests for riders in public places
🔹E-bikes and scooters which can exceed 25km/h unassisted will be banned and 12km speed limits to apply near pedestrians
🔹Higher penalties for speeding, failure to wear a helmet, careless riding, illegally carrying passengers and riding Personal Mobility Devices on prohibited roads
🔹Parental accountability for children under 16 riding illegally

To coincide with the new laws, Queensland Police are launching Operation Surety to target dangerous riders, illegal high-powered devices, speeding, drink riding, and helmet offences.
