Brothers Mark and Robert waited a long time since their dad had his memorable Tiger Moth joy flight. What a great idea to do it together? June was the lucky one on Wednesday and all the family were there before school to see her off for a thrilling joy flight experience with volunteer pilot Michael in the famous yellow vintage Tiger Moth. Ross had his exciting 60-minute birthday flight at the same time with Volunteer pilot Ross in "Strawberries and Cream", also a WW2 Tiger Moth. They both were amazed at the beautiful aerial views of the city, harbour, beaches and surrounding canefields in the cool clear air. Jacob loved seeing the city and harbour from the air but he was more interested in checking out fishing spots further north during his thrilling joy flight experience in the open cockpit vintage Tiger Moth. Then John came in from Seaforth to feel what it was like to be a WW2 aviator as he saw the best of our scenery from the air, before his nephew Ben, who escaped the Albury-Wodonga winter for a great view of the district's highlights. Saturday was perfect joy flight weather for 4 lucky people in Mackay's iconic WW2 Tiger Moth vintage aircraft. Verne was excited to take his long-awaited flight; Shane used his birthday flight to marvel at the views over the valley and his Marian home. It was Kevin's 80th and what a great way to celebrate! Then Dallas was next and volunteer pilot Ross circled his Walkerston home as they took in the best of our amazing scenery. Stew and George were helped on the ground by Terry. John's family was there in force to help him celebrate his big birthday with an amazing 60-minute joy flight, before he returned to Zambia this week. Nigel left the bright lights 3 years ago and used his birthday present flight for an aerial view of the beautiful coastline around his new home at Grasstree Beach. Volunteer pilot Ross was only too pleased to share the fun with them from the open cockpit 1942 model Tiger Moth while Mark and Stewart were ground crew. Today our Museum was honoured to support another poignant aviation anniversary for Mackay. At 10.20am our vintage Tiger Moth aircraft circled the Far Beach memorial, as the community gathered below to remember Australia's worst civilian air tragedy, in the waters nearby. Around 10pm on 10 June 1960, all 29 lives were lost as TAA Fokker Friendship VH-TFB crashed into the sea on approach into Mackay in poor weather. Many still remember relatives and friends, including many school children, who were aboard. A cause was never found, but the incident resulted in the introduction of cockpit voice recorders for commercial flights.

We welcomed Beatrice and young Angelina at the Museum this week during their visit from Baden-Wurttemberg in Germany. They wanted to know all about the vintage aircraft and Google translate worked hard helping with the questions and answers! It might have been different in 1943 when our famous Tiger Moth was training young pilots to take on the Luftwaffe...
