Mackay Tiger Moth Museum The Mackay Tiger Moth Museum operates Joy Flights on most weekends from its hangar located at Casey Avenue in Mackay.

The AMWU retirees chose to have their monthly meeting somewhere different today, and our Museum loved having them. Stewart explained the design features of our incredible WW2 vintage deHavilland Tiger Moth aircraft and Chief Pilot Michael demonstrated the time-honoured start-up procedure by manually swinging on the propeller. Emma was ecstatic about her birthday experience aloft this morning in the iconic vintage WW2 Tiger Moth, the excitement built up even more after a few weather-related postponements. She brought Andrew along to share the fun, but her beloved 50-year-old Beetle called "Macky" stole the limelight before they got away.

Rhett and Toni were both so lucky to catch perfect weather for their joy flights in the vintage Tiger Moth, and even luckier that our volunteer pilot Michael and Ground Crew Stewart could do it on Friday! Saturday was VP Day, commemorating the Japanese surrender that ended World War 2. While ANZAC Day is our main day of remembrance, a group of citizens joined the RSL in Jubilee Park to mark the occasion. At exactly 11.00am a lone Tiger Moth flew above, carrying volunteers Michael and George and the respect of our Museum's volunteers for those who served and gave their lives so that we can enjoy our freedom today. Lesley thought her special gift of a memorable joy flight to her other half would cure his fear of flying - but when he totally refused, she took the flight herself! Her own adrenaline rush soon evaporated and the magic feeling took over, soaring over the district in the open cockpit. Volunteer pilot Michael loves sharing the thrill of old-style flying in the WW2 Tiger Moth. Gary also loved his experience, and Leigh found his home near Pleystowe after enjoying the scenic circuit over the city and beaches. Stewart and George were ground crew. Michael has his own plane in Zimbabwe and has done heaps of flying, but not in a genuine WW2 ex-military trainer before. He loved the raw basic feel of the open cockpit Tiger Moth experience as they cruised between the clouds over the city and beautiful Pioneer Valley. Volunteer pilot Michael got their hearts pumping as he showed them the amazing sights over the beaches and Pioneer Valley from 1000ft. Mark and Terry got them away. Stewart M was our Museum's treasurer many years ago, and came back for a nostalgic joy flight in our WW2 vintage Tiger Moth CYA. Resting in the hangar this week he found the same yellow Tiger Moth he remembers, in fine condition and still going, and his old mate Stewart G still doing ground crew. Kelly, Lily and Indie were all there too and enjoyed the attractions in the hangar as Jake was away taking in the city's sights from 1000ft in this morning's perfect flying weather. Today foster mum Rebecca gave young Harley an amazing joy flight experience in the vintage Tiger Moth and now his dream to be a pilot has awakened! Volunteer pilot Michael took him around the best of Mackay's scenery but it was the thrill of soaring into the sky and the feeling of freedom that captivated Harley (wearing the orange sun shirt).
