It’s with a heavy heart that we share the passing of one of our own — an early believer in community-led emergency and disaster response, and a true friend to both people and animals.

I first met Tonia during Cyclone Debbie in 2017, when she arrived at our recovery centre determined to help the animals affected. She didn’t just show up — she stayed.
She rolled up her sleeves and took on local tasks, rescued animals of all shapes and sizes (some straight into her own home!), and coordinated so much animal food that we could hardly believe it.

Even after the recovery centre was decommissioned and the spotlight moved on, Tonia didn’t. She kept showing up, helping with response and recovery efforts in the weeks and months that followed.

Tonia was known for her honesty, her humour, her big chats, and an even bigger heart.

She was a firm believer in what we’re building, and we’ll always consider her one of the first to see the value in community-driven action. A friend for life — and a soul we won’t forget.

Say hi to all the fur babies for us, Tonia. We’ll keep doing the work down here.

— this 12-month practical training program is for you.

🎓 Graduate with: Certificate III in Emergency Response and Rescue (RII30719)
📜 Nationally Recognised Units of Competency earned monthly

🌀🔥🌊📦 Respond to local disaster mitigation, response and recovery incidents as requested and get paid for your skills and time

Participants are assigned to one of four ‘operational crew’ teams. Each month includes pre-session theory and hands-on training, with certificates issued as each unit is completed. Training is offered by current rescue and medical industry experts utilising local rescue equipment and real life scenario locations.
