Metro South State Emergency Service

Metro South State Emergency Service Volunteers committed to their community. Call 132 500 for emergency response to storm and flood.

The State Emergency Service (SES) is a volunteer emergency service organisation which gives immediate assistance during emergencies and disasters. We also provide community response to 'day to day' incidents such as vehicle accidents, searches, cliff rescues, flood and storm damage situations and any other incidents that might require rescue or search services. To provide an emergency response to

the communities in this area 24 hours a day, seven days a week we have volunteers based in 67 Units at strategic locations and 6 Community Response Teams. These Community Response Teams help us combat the challenge of servicing some of the remoter areas of the State by providing a first response to incidents while support comes from Units further away. The SES also cooperates closely with other statutory emergency services and has storm and flood relief as responsibilities in State legislation. As the Hazard Leader and Control Agency for extreme weather in South Australia, the SES aims to increase community awareness and preparedness relating to extreme weather events. A well prepared community is better able to respond to and recover from an emergency. To become an SES volunteer phone 1300 364 587 or visit http://www.ses.sa.gov.au/site/join_the_ses.jsp

On Friday night we had our fundraiser quiz night where we raised funds for new equipment for our unit!
Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to the quiz, the raffle, and the silent auction.
A massive thanks to all of the local businesses that donated and supported the night - including Club Marion who generously provided their function room for the night!

Following on from our Metro South team winning the State Rescue Challenge over the weekend, Acting Chief Officer Kristy Phelps and District Officer Craig Brassington visited the unit for our Tuesday night training.

We were able to review photos and videos from the weekend and discuss with the rest of the unit the different scenarios the team competed in.

Metro South took out a triple win - the team won the quiz night held on Saturday, which was sealed by incredible dance moves by George, along with Metro South member Hannah Hilton winning the best casualty award with her amazing acting skills in the mass casualty stand. The third win was retaining the title for the 2nd year in a row.

Below are a few shots from both the Metro South camera and the photographers on site, capturing some action shots of the team. Scenarios this year included tilting a horse float to rescue a stuck casualty, crawling through a restricted space to rescue multiple people, a mapping and navigation exercise, and an impalement through the chest.

Please note these photos were taken during a training activity and do not show the unit responding to a real emergency.

Our winning team now get to fly off to Queensland in September to compete in the National Disaster Rescue Challenge!

Also of note was our Unit Training Coordinator and Crew Leader, Nikki Burns, being presented with a Premier's Certificate of Recognition for her contributions to our team and the Metro South unit as a whole with planning training sessions, organising inter-agency exercises and ensuring we are prepared for any event to come!
Congratulations Nikki, and thank you for what you do for Metro South!

Today we had members attend a Touch-a-Truck event at Club Marion held by the Department of Child Protection!

We set up a super interactive stand where young people could try out our metal detectors, hydraulics, and chainsaws (without the batteries of course!), and take a seat in our truck to get a feel for responding to jobs 🚨

Did you see last nights ‘blood moon’ total lunar eclipse!? 🌕
From 8.20 - 11.47 pm our members were able to watch the whole eclipse (last one until 2029!) while doing skills maintenance for Fall Restraint Systems, and general unit maintenance after a weekend of responding to jobs.

One of our drone pilots, Reuben, was able to use the camera on our RPA (drone) to snap these pictures 📸

Did anyone else manage to get any photos of the eclipse last night? Post them in the comments 👇🏼
