SEVERE WEATHER WARNING TODAY

** Update: A new warning has been issued. Stay informed: http://www.bom.gov.au/vic/warnings/ **

Severe Weather Warning for damaging wind.
Issued at: 4:06 am EST on Monday 1 June 2026

Where:

For people in parts of Central, East Gippsland, North Central, North East, West and South Gippsland and South West Forecast Districts.

Locations which may be affected include Ballarat, Bacchus Marsh, Falls Creek, Yarra Glen, Dargo and Mt Baw Baw.

When:

Damaging winds to develop about central and eastern areas from Monday afternoon.

Situation:

A complex low pressure system will approach Victoria on Monday, with vigorous northwesterly winds expected ahead of a cold front which will cross the state on Monday night.

Impacts:

For Central Victoria: Strong winds averaging 50 to 60 km/h with damaging wind gusts of around 90 km/h are likely to develop from Monday afternoon over the Macedon and Otway ranges and their southern slopes. Into the evening damaging wind gusts are also possible over lower lying areas including the northern suburbs of Melbourne. Winds are then forecast to ease before dawn on Tuesday morning.

For the Northeastern Ranges: damaging winds averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 100 km/h are likely over elevated areas above 1200 metres from late Monday evening. Winds are then forecast to ease by late Tuesday morning.

What you should do:

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:

* If driving conditions are dangerous, safely pull over away from trees, drains, low-lying areas and floodwater. Avoid travel if possible.

* Stay safe by avoiding dangerous hazards, such as floodwater, mud, debris, damaged roads and fallen trees.

* Be aware - heat, fire or recent storms may make trees unstable and more likely to fall when it's windy or wet.

* Check that loose items, such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured. Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.

* Stay indoors and away from windows.

* If outdoors, move to a safe place indoors. Stay away from trees, drains, gutters, creeks and waterways.

* Stay away from fallen powerlines - always assume they are live.

* Be aware that in fire affected areas, rainfall run-off into waterways may contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks. Heavy rainfall may also increase the potential for landslides and debris across roads.

* Stay informed: Monitor weather warnings, forecasts and river levels at the Bureau of Meteorology website, and warnings through VicEmergency website/app/hotline.

Check https://www.bom.gov.au/weather-and-climate/warnings-and-alerts. Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts or call 1300 659 210. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.

The next warning is due to be issued by 11:00 am AEST Monday.

Standing Together: Lorne Community Recognised for January Flood Response and Recovery Efforts.

The Mayor of the Surf Coast Shire invited our Unit Controller as part of a representative group from the Lorne community to a community reception to recognise the impact of the January 2026 floods in Lorne. The event was proposed by the honoured guest Her Excellency The Honourable Ms Sam Mostyn AC Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia.

The Governor General gave a very insightful and inspirational speech. Highlighting It was a privilege to stand with us as we reflected on the January floods and the impact they had on families, businesses, volunteers, and the broader Surf Coast community.

Recognition was given of Community Strength & Local Leadership. Neighbours checked on neighbours. Businesses opened their doors. Community groups coordinated food, shelter, and support. Local leaders stepped forward with clarity and care. The Governor General also recognised Loss & Ongoing Recovery

This is what defines regional Australia — not the disasters themselves, but the way people come together in their wake.

Our Unit Controller was fortunate to meet the Governor General where they discussed the unit's role in the response and his own experience, thoughts and perspective. The Governor General recognised the Lorne Unit and neighbouring units who mobilised so quickly. Actions that protected lives, supported residents plus visitors alike and brought calm to moments of fear and uncertainty.

Our Community Stands Together to Honour the Anzacs

The Lorne community came together to commemorate Anzac Day. This Anzac Day marks the 111th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings. We pause to remember and pay tribute to the service and sacrifices made by Australians: from the first landing in Gallipoli, to the men and women currently serving. SES Lorne’s Deputy Controller, Kevin Diviny, laid a wreath on behalf of our unit.

What an amazing team we have right here on the Coast.

We are so proud to support the SES Lorne Unit and the incredible work they do across our community and district. Under the leadership of Chris Jones, Unit Commander, this group quietly goes about making a real difference when people need it most.

The Community Bank Surf Coast was proud to invest in a defibrillator unit for their ground crew. This is not just equipment, it is something that can help save lives both on and off the track.

And when you look at the numbers, you start to see just how important this team is.

In the past year alone, the Lorne SES has responded to 122 call outs. That includes road crashes, land searches, cliff rescues, assisting Ambulance Victoria and clearing a huge 82 trees from the Great Ocean Road and surrounding areas. They have also carried out multiple stretcher rescues, helping people safely out of difficult bush terrain.

When a priority call comes in, they are out the door and on the road in around 8 minutes. That is commitment.

They are part of more than 5000 SES volunteers across Victoria, all giving their time to keep communities safe.

If you ever need SES assistance for storms, floods or fallen trees, call 132 500.

This is what community looks like. Volunteers stepping up and locals backing them in.

Do you bank with us? If you don’t, why not? When you support your Community Bank, you are helping us invest in initiatives just like this, right here where it matters.

We ❤️ the Community!!
