History Week 2026: Keeping stories at Eskbank House Museum

Last night our guest speaker Ray Christison presented a very well received talk on the social history of Lithgow’s Textile Industries, thank you.

To complement this talk the museum brought out some of our Lithgow/Cooerwull Mills blankets, objects, and the QEII Royal visit carpet from 1954. Also on display some of the fashion items from the collection including hats, frocks and shoes.

These mini pop-up exhibitions gave us an opportunity to display and care for the parts of the collection usually in storage.

Today we had the pleasure of a visit by the Rylstone Care & Transport group. They braved the cold and vowed to return again when the roses are in bloom.

Fashion and textiles at Eskbank House Museum

The museum is preparing for next week's guest speaker event in conversation with Ray Christison. Fashion and the Textile Industries of Lithgow.

Nothing says fashion like shoes and embroided dresses, so we couldn't resist bringing them out of storage.

If you love history, worked in one of the many Textile factories or just love our beautiful museum, we invite you to join us at Eskbank House next Thursday 10 September 2026 at 5pm

Our pop-up exhibition will feature objects from the Lithgow/Cooerwull Woollen Mills and our beautiful shoes and dresses.

Come and listen to Kim Bagot-Hiller as she tells the tales of the Walker / Barton Family, how their small histories become part of Big Stories, that shaped a nation and contributed to scientific discoveries. To name a few!!

Hello, my name is Kim! a PhD History student at Charles Sturt University, with a passion for uncovering small histories found in the lives of everyday people. I am fascinated with where these histories are found in families and how they connect to the bigger stories of towns, nations and events that shape who we are.

Eskbank Volunteers at Portland Central School Volunteer Expo

Volunteers Kathryn & Jean dressed in 1800s costumes attended the Portland Central School Volunteer Expo to share with students the value of volunteering to promote and protect our local history and heritage.

Shoes and bootmaking at Eskbank

The greyhound track had major electrical work happening today so power was out all day. Perfect opportunity to open boxes in the storeroom at the museum.

Care of Collection at Eskbank House Museum

The many objects in museums collections need ongoing maintenance cleaning and condition reporting. Currently the Eskbank team are working on the beautiful collection of lamps. If you are interested is these beautiful objects now is the time to visit Museum and see them up close instead of in the distance and dim museum lighting of their permanent display.

It's a team effort to care for the museum and its collections. Jenny is working on cleaning and condition reporting and Fiona is assessing and updating the catalogue records.

Silly Warm Hat Thursday at Eskbank House Museum

Volunteers gardened in the cold today keeping warm with their silly hats. The cold weather didn't keep people away with two groups of travellers visiting today.

The Community Heritage Garden harvest today was turnips and radishes.

Museums of History NSW at Eskbank House Museum

Joanna Nichols, Regional Coordinator, Curatorial & Collections, and Dr Matthew Stephens, Research Librarian at the Caroline Simpson Library & Research Collection visited Eskbank as part of the Museums of History NSW Collections on Tour.

This was the first of what we hope will be a continuing partnership to promote our history and heritage of NSW and the Lithgow LGA. Included in the collection of objects on display were two books connected to William Maxwell, brother of Mary Brown (nee Maxwell) original owner of the Eskbank Estate.

Today at Eskbank House Museum

An enthusiastic group of gardeners gathered at the museum for a session with Jessica Lawn, horticulturist, arborist and designer of Lithgow City Council's Community Heritage Garden.

Fondly known as Mary’s Garden, it is an imagined Victorian kitchen garden in keeping with the period of the house, having a traditional layout and plants that were available in Australia in the 1800s.
