Last weekend was a fantastic chance for members of the 41st Battalion, Royal New South Wales Regiment to put their physical abilities to the test. This is the Army Combatives Program, a close-quarters hand-to-hand combat system used by military personnel to build a combat mindset, retain weapons, and survive physical encounters. There are several levels of training to this training, building through levels of skill & toughness.

This was carried out at the fantastic NSW Police Force training centre in Coffs Harbour. With all training carried out under the strict supervision of expert staff. On Tuesday, the 27th of October 2026 from 6 until 8pm, there will be A Night In The Army Reserve hosted at Fitzroy Barracks, 24 Duke Street, Coffs Harbour. This will be a chance for anyone interested in a part-time military career to come along, meet & talk with our soldiers, along with ADF Career Advisors.

The 41st Battalion, Royal New South Wales Regiment will be supporting the Biannual 2026 NSW State Firefighter Championships, to be held at ARW Forsyth Park (McLean Street Oval) in Coffs Harbour from October 22nd until the 24th. This will see many Fire and Rescue NSW personnel compete and test their firefighting skills against each other. Many members of our Battalion have civilian careers with the NSW & Queensland Fire Departments, plus in Airservices Australia aviation rescue & firefighting.

Building on a long partnership, where both of organisations have worked alongside each other & provided support whenever it was needed, it is an honour for our soldiers to be present and help out during the competition. We encourage anyone in the area to come down and cheer on the competitors, see the rescue equipment being used and even chat with our soldiers with their military display. On October 27th, there will be A Night In The Army Reserve at Fitzroy Barracks in Duke Street from 6 until 8pm, for anyone interested in a part-time military career.

To get out and about in the community in a literal sense. Members of Charlie Company in Coffs Harbour recently conducted Urban Patrol training through the streets of the city. From Fitzroy Barracks in Duke Street, they moved through in a professional, safe and effective manner, with loads of support from the many locals that they encountered.

This is part of a busy week for the 41st Battalion, Royal New South Wales Regiment members in Coffs Harbour, as they support 2026 NSW State Firefighter Championships in Coffs Harbour. This will see Fire and Rescue NSW personnel test their skills at ARW Forsyth Park (Mclean Street Oval) from the 22nd until the 24th of October. This will be followed by A Night In The Army Reserves on the 27th of October 2026 from 6 until 8pm, for all members of the public interested in a part-time military career.

A unique and surprising coincidence for members of the 41st Battalion, Royal New South Wales Regiment with a visitor from Papua New Guinea at the North Coast National - Lismore Show. The trio of men, who are working in Casino, holding a connection the Australian Army dating back to World War Two. The man in green comes from Wewak on the North West Coast of Papua New Guinea and was carrying an original medal belonging to his Grandfather, who was a Warrant Officer with the Papuan Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels in support of the Allied Forces.

The connection to the 41st Battalion is through Lieutenant Colonel Charles Green, who joined the 41st Battalion at the age of 16 at Grafton. He then became an officer shortly before enlisting in the Australian Imperial Forces at the outbreak of World War 2. At only 25 years of age, he had reached the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and was placed in command of the 2nd/11th Battalion AIF, during the Aitape-Wewak Campaign, supported possibly by this man's grandfather directly. Liberating this man's hometown from the Imperial Japanese 18th Army.

LTCOL Green was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for his actions on this campaign and would later serve as Commanding Officer of our Battalion and then the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment, during the Korean War. The only person to have commanded an AIF, a Militia and a RAR battalion. It was an honour to rekindle the relationship we have with Papua New Guinea and the Australian Defence Force.

It has been a fantastic two days already for the 41st Battalion, Royal New South Wales Regiment at the North Coast National Lismore Show. With many people visiting us and looking at our displays. We even had a visit from a friend at NSW SES Lismore City Unit, who was exceptionally tall. Our soldiers have enjoyed talking with everyone who has come by, with others talking with our ADF Careers advisors on the benefits of a military career. We also had several of our soldiers at the show in their civilian roles, as teachers and carers for the disabled, sharing their military lives with their groups of youths.

With another day to go, we encourage anyone to call in and say hello. We are located to the left of the Main Entry off Alexandra Parade, near where the Farmers Market is regularly held. We look forward to seeing you.

On this day, 109 years ago, the 41st Battalion AIF was tasked to re-enter the frontline and help continue the advance towards the village of Passchendaele. The British 66th Division had failed in advancing further. Starting from just north of the Tyne Cot Cemetery, they held a series of fortified shellholes as the ground was too waterlogged to dig trenches. All movement had to be by day, as the ground was too treacherous to cross in the dark. The mud swallowing men laden with equipment whole. This meant they were subject to constant shelling.

Some had protection inside captured German concrete pillboxes (small fortresses), but as they were shelled, the white concrete dust made them more visible against the dark mud surroundings, making them a bigger target for German artillery. Any attempt at advance was also hindered by the soldiers finding hundreds of incapacitated British soldiers still in their positions, 3 or 4 days after being wounded. With their evacuation almost impossible. Soldiers kept their feet in sodden sandbags because they were too swollen for boots.

The intention was to push to the Belgian coast, to destroy the German U-Boat bases there and stop their attacks on shipping around the British Isles. What started in fine weather and great advances, with the Battles of Menin Road, Polygon Wood & Broodseinde capturing ground from the Germans. The weather had changed for the worst and all hope of advancing disappeared at the Battle of Passchendaele.

The first sketch was by 41st Bn AIF soldier, Private Thomas Cross, of returning German prisoners helping to bring back the wounded at Passchendaele back to Ypres. It appears in the Battalion's history book, The Forty-First.

The 41st Battalion, Royal New South Wales Regiment would like to thank the Anzac Square & Memorial Galleries in Brisbane, Queensland for their story highlighting the tale of a soldier from the 41st Battalion AIF in their last battle of the First World War. The 5th of October,1918 marks the 108th anniversary since the Battalion left the line for the final time in the war, marching down "Roo de Kanga" at Peronne, France where the Battle of Mont St Quentin have been fought a month earlier. Now with the first civilian refugees arriving in the town, just as the Australians were leaving the front.

From a posted strength of over 1,000 soldiers in the Battalion, there was only around 270 left after this battle on the Hindenburg Line alongside the US 27th Division, AEF. So weak were all of the Battalions, the 42nd Battalion AIF was merged into the 41st Battalion AIF as 'B' Company on their third attempt at merging the units. All in preparation for returning to battle soon. However the war ended before that could happen and the casualty list for the entire war read, "Prisoners -Nil".
