Victoria State Emergency Service - Lilydale Unit Our volunteers are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to assist you in an Emergency.

Lilydale State Emergency Service (SES) has a proud tradition of providing world class Road Rescue, Search and Rescue and Storm and Flood damage assistance to our community for over 50 years. Since 1963 we have served the residents of Lilydale, Chirnside Park, Montrose, Mooroolbark, Kilsyth, Mt Evelyn, Seville, Silvan, Yarra Glen, Christmas Hills, Kalorama, Mt Dandenong, Gruyere, Coldstream and surrounds.

Tuesday got off to a busy start for our volunteers with a 0545 call for a crash in Croydon Hills with possibly trapped occupant. Just as we arrived our FRV and Wonga Park CFA colleagues advised that the driver was out of the car with nothing more than some injured pride.

Around 1000 we got a number of a calls for a tree down on a house - slightly odd with zero wind - which turned out to be a tree on 2 houses, with a suspected Gas leak.

Mt Evelyn Fire Brigade crews managed that element and 7 of our volunteers spent 3.5 hours removing the parts of the tree that damaged the houses and making temporary repairs….. but…..

Before they were finished - another crash with possible entrapment in Lilydale. In total 9 of our volunteers responded - again - thankfully only minor injuries, alongside Lilydale CFA Fire Brigade and Chirnside Park Fire Brigade - CFA - before heading back to finish off the Tree on Houses ….

The Training Team have been hard at work with last week’s Rescue Theory training put into practice this week.

Three ‘staged’ levels of complexity to ensure our members get the most from their training

Group 1 - Non Rescue Accredited - did rescue Tool familiarisation
Group 2 - Less experienced Rescue Accredited members - went through common terminology and rapid access techniques
Group 3 - Advanced Rescue Operators - reviewed complex passenger vehicle extrication by reviewing multiple techniques for extricating patients from less common situations such as back seats of Coupes and third row seats in SUVs

Building capability through constantly enhancing our members skills.

It made for a busy night in the training yard. That’s how we make sure if you need us - we’re ready.

A friendly reminder that when you see Red and Blue (or Magenta or Amber lights on a Towing or Roadside assist vehicle - yep- we know that sometimes you don’t know if it’s one of those specific types on vehicle and not some random truck that left their amber lights on……) that you must endeavour to slow to 40 kph.

That DOESN’T mean slamming the anchors on. It means making a reasonable effort to slow down in a safe manner.

We only use our Red and Blue lights to respond to emergencies or if we are parked at a less urgent job if we absolutely need to to maintain both our safety and yours

So please, Slow Down for Red and Blues

**Traffic Alert - Maroondah Hwy, Chirnside Park**

Just after 7.30 pm this evening, crews from Lilydale SES along with CFA volunteers and Ambulance Victoria Paramedics responded to a report of a single vehicle incident

Outbound lanes of Maroondah Hwy, near the intersection of Landscape Drive, are currently closed with diversions in place

Over the past two weeks, our Training Team has been busy upskilling members in advanced vehicle stabilisation and extrication techniques.

🔸 Non‑RCR members were introduced to the fundamentals of vehicle stabilisation, equipment, and terminology.
🔸 RCR‑accredited members successfully stabilised a vehicle on its side using the StabFast and complementary methods.
🔸 Advanced RCR‑accredited members tackled a complex scenario involving a vehicle balanced on another car with a simulated “power pole” resting on top — all of which had to be secured before the “casualty” could be safely extricated.

Continuous training like this ensures our members are ready for any challenge and can respond safely, confidently, and professionally when our community needs us.

Despite being a busy week operationally with several rescue calls, the training team had us training in our Low Angle Rescue/Belay system.

This rope system allows us to safely move patients up and down slopes up to 30degrees (approx)

Having our teams proficient in its set up the system means we can quickly move patients when assisting AV with patients who need to be moved by stretcher.

Another Monday night and another week of high quality training to keep our teams sharp and ready for whatever comes.

June 9, 2021 is remembered by our unit as one of the biggest single storm events in Victoria’s History.

Between ourselves and the SES Emerald Unit we received over 5000 requests for assistance in 12 hours, in what was supposed to be a “not really anything spectacular” day/night in The Dandenongs.

It turned into anything but. Winds in excess of 120kph lashed suburbs like Kalorama, Monbulk, Olinda, Mt Dandenong to name just a few.

Numerous rescues were called in and 10 members from Lilydale and Emerald units were awarded the VicSES Commendation for Bravery for working alongside Ambulance Victoria Paramedics for over 3 hours to get to and then extricate a male trapped by a fallen tree. Emerald lost a vehicle to a fallen tree whilst the operation was underway, as trees continued to fall until the wind eased as the sun came up.

But it didn’t stop there. For the next 4 weeks, Lilydale SES has a presence at Kalorama Reserve every day, more than 6 days prior to other relief and recovery assets from State and Local Government arrived.

We took donations of food, fuel and supplies. We set up a free ‘supermarket’ alongside community members, so people could remain with their homes and their community. Connection to community is a vital part of relief and recovery.

We organised washing machine trucks from OrangeSky so people could have clean clothes to wear, fuel and gas cylinder supplies from Supagas and coordinated ongoing work with agencies including CFA, FRV, DEECA, ERV and power companies and Yarra Ranges Council.

For those that lived through it, we hope you are recovering. The landscape still bares the scars, and we know some of you do too.

With time, all scars fade, some quicker than others.
