A new wetland system is coming to Birdsland Reserve in Belgrave.

Thanks to a partnership between Council, the State Government, Melbourne Water and the University of Melbourne, a $1.6 million project will help protect local waterways and reduce the impacts of stormwater in the area.

The new smart wetland will divert water from Hazelvale Creek to slow its flow, capture sediment and pollutants, and improve water quality before releasing cleaner water back into Monbulk Creek. Real-time technology will also help manage water flow to better support the health of the catchment.

This important project will help reduce erosion and flooding, protect local habitats — including the Dandenong Ranges’ last breeding population of platypus.

Last week, Council and the Narrap Rangers teamed up to support Eco Warriors Australia’s Planting the Seed program — helping local students get hands-on with caring for our environment 🌱

Students from Yering Primary School, Victoria Road Primary School, Coldstream Primary School, Lilydale Primary School and Yarra Glen Primary School planted more than 2000 native plants at Yering Bushland Reserve to help revegetate the site.

The planting is part of our broader Yering Billabongs Project, which is focused on reconnecting and restoring this important floodplain environment for future generations.

A big thank you to everyone involved 💚

We’re planning for the future of Mooroolbark – and we want to hear from you📣

We’re developing a Place Plan to help guide the future of Mooroolbark, and community feedback will play an important role in shaping it.

Over the next four weeks, come and chat with our team in person at the Mooroolbark Library or Community Centre. We’d love to hear what’s working well, what could be improved, and your ideas for the future of Mooroolbark.

🌐If you can’t make it in person, you can still have your say online: https://shaping.yarraranges.vic.gov.au/mooroolbark-place-plan
