Krystal Maytom to create her own legacy as she runs for local government
Elizabeth Gracie

Krystal Maytom is wanting to build her own legacy of community service as a Councillor for the Leeton Shire, after years of keen involvement in a variety of local organisations.

Actively involved in the community from a young age, Ms Maytom first began her time with community groups with the Leeton Youth Committee.

Over the years, she has since started volunteering with the newly reformed Leeton JumpStart where she serves as publicity officer, is a member of the Parkview Public School Parents and Carers Association and the Leeton Business Chamber which over the past year, she has served as President.

When speaking with The Irrigator, Ms Maytom said now felt like a good time to put her hand up for council candidacy in the local government elections.

"I have such a deep passion for the community which is why I wanted to put myself forward as a candidate," Ms Maytom said.

"Now just feels like the right time, I have flexibility with my work and my children are at school so I have the time on my hands to devote my efforts to the job at hand."

She is also quick to note that whilst she may carry the Maytom name, her strong involvement with the community made her a good candidate for voters to consider come election day.

"I have always been my own person and whilst I am really proud of what my father has achieved, we are two different people," Ms Maytom said.

"I am a people person, I know how to connect with people and I have a solid understanding of what is required of a councillor.

"My active involvement with a number of community groups also allows me to connect with a wide variety of people."

According to Ms Maytom, an increase of health services available in the Leeton Shire was her number one priority.

"We need to work towards regaining lost services at our hospital like obstetrics, we need better support for mental health and need to lobby our state and federal members to get these services back in place," Ms Maytom said.

"I am also very interested in the growth of the town, how to stimulate our local economy and make Leeton more liveable, a place where people grow up and want to stick around because there is industry and opportunity here."

As a fresh face to council, Ms Maytom also noted that it would be great to see new voices and ideas heard at council meetings.

"New ideas bring a point of difference, it's especially great to see four women put up their hands for council and offer some diversity," Ms Maytom said.

"Community members really should consider new candidates and what they can offer.

"At the end of the day I am really passionate about the Leeton Shire, I am committed to working with and being an advocate for the community and if elected I will endeavor to put the ideas and visions of the community forward to the council."

Community service, improved health services, and longterm growth and opportunities on Krystal Maytoms mind

I am excited to throw my hat in the ring and officially announce that I will be running as a candidate in the Leeton Shire Council elections on the 4th December 2021.
My name is Krystal Maytom and I have lived in Leeton for most of my life, having only left to study at age 18 where I spent some time living in Sydney and on the Gold Coast where I met my husband, Shayne. We returned to Leeton as we thought it would be the perfect place to raise a family. We have three school aged children, Benji, Beau and Aria.
For me, running for council feels like a natural extension of who I am as I have always been actively involved in the community from a young age. During my youth, I was actively involved in the Youth Committee that was instrumental in raising funds for the skate park and I was an Ambassador in the Leeton Sunrice Festival and awarded highest fundraiser.
I am currently involved in the community in a volunteer capacity as President of Leeton Business Chamber, Publicity officer for Leeton Jumpstart as well as an active member of the Parkview School P and C. I have also been involved in the Light Up Leeton event for many years.
I am currently employed as a Business Advisor delivering the Business Connect program. This role allows me to work closely with business owners through a range of business issues. Prior to this role I worked in the Community Services Sector in youth mentoring, disability, and parenting programs. I also spent 6 years managing the Leeton Roxy Community Theatre and have experience overseeing large budgets, planning events and applying for grants.
If elected, it will be a great privilege to serve the community and listen to their concerns and represent their vision for Leeton Shire.
A focus of mine would be ensuring we have adequate health services in the Leeton Shire – including hospital, ambulance, mental health and aged care. It is vital that we maintain the services we have and rebuild what we previously had.
I am passionate about our community and invested in the growth of our town, in particular business and industry. I will ensure that I work with our existing industries to look at any opportunity to expand/value add for future employment opportunities.
We live in a wonderful town and if elected, I look forward to connecting with the community and working hard to make it an even better place to live.
