A safe C*D is a strong C*D.

Today I’ve written to Tasmania Police seeking greater police visibility and more regular foot patrols through the Launceston C*D — particularly around the Brisbane Street Mall and key bus stops.

Residents, workers, visitors and local businesses deserve to feel safe and confident in the heart of our city.
Council can support interim security measures, but lasting improvement requires a coordinated approach between Tasmania Police, Council and our local businesses.

A safer C*D means a more vibrant C*D — and greater confidence in Launceston.

Great to catch up with Junction Food Van!

I want to see affordable and accessible food van permits across the City of Launceston, giving more people the opportunity to turn a great idea into a small business.
Food vans can be an important economic stepping stone into hospitality — start small, build a customer base, grow your business and, hopefully, take that next step into a permanent premises.

We should be a city that backs ambition, encourages entrepreneurship and makes it easier for local people to have a go.

More opportunity. More local businesses. More reasons to get out and enjoy Launceston. 🚚☕🍔

IMAGINE WHAT WE COULD DELIVER FOR OUR LOCAL FAMILIES. 🌳

Around 44 new family play spaces, similar in scope to the Punchbowl Reserve upgrade, could potentially be delivered for the equivalent of $22 million in major project budget blowouts.

That really highlights the opportunity we have to make every ratepayer dollar go further.

Better project delivery gives us more capacity to build new community facilities, look after the roads and infrastructure we already have, and keep rates lower for longer rather than relying on above-inflation increases.

I have a plan to improve how major projects are planned, managed and delivered at the City of Launceston — with a focus on minimising cost blowouts and delivering on time and on budget.

It’s about learning from experience and looking forward to what we can achieve together.

More for families. More for our suburbs. Better value for ratepayers.

Launceston: If you feel like your dollar doesn’t go as far as it used to, you’re far from alone.

That’s why we need to focus on helping families get ahead, not just get by - creating more local jobs, addressing underemployment and making it easier for parents who want to work more hours to do so.

From a local government perspective, that means encouraging private investment in childcare, supporting new centres where demand exists and removing unnecessary barriers to investment.

A stronger Launceston means more opportunities to work, earn and build a better future for your family.

Launceston should be ambitious and keep investing in our city. But major projects must be backed by strong planning, financial discipline and accountability.
My plan is about delivering more for ratepayers - ON TIME and ON BUDGET.

✅ 1. REALISTIC BUDGETS BEFORE PROJECTS BEGIN
Major projects should have properly developed costings, contingencies, timelines and risk assessments before Council commits ratepayer money. Get the numbers right before we start.

✅ 2. LOCK IN THE SCOPE — CONTROL THE EXTRAS
One of the biggest risks to project budgets is changing scope after work begins. Significant additions or variations should require a clear business case showing the cost, benefit and impact on the overall budget.

✅ 3. INDEPENDENT GATEWAY REVIEWS
For major projects, independent reviews at key stages should test whether the project is properly designed, costed, funded and ready to proceed before Council moves to the next stage.

✅ 4. EARLY WARNING ON COST BLOWOUTS
Council shouldn’t learn about serious problems when millions have already been spent. Major projects should have clear financial triggers requiring immediate reporting to Councillors when costs or timelines begin moving off track.

✅ 5. STRONGER PROCUREMENT & CONTRACT MANAGEMENT
Better tendering, stronger contracts and active management of variations can protect ratepayers. Where possible, we should also create genuine opportunities for competitive local businesses to participate.

✅ 6. PUBLIC MAJOR PROJECT SCORECARD
Ratepayers deserve to know how their money is being spent. Publish regular updates showing each major project’s original budget, current forecast cost, completion date, variations and progress.

✅ 7. LEARN FROM EVERY PROJECT
Every completed major project should undergo a formal review comparing the promised budget and timeline with the final result. Lessons learned shouldn’t sit on a shelf - they should be incorporated into the next project.

This isn’t about building less. It’s about delivering better.
