Children's Week starts tomorrow on 24 October!

This week promotes awareness of children's rights under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). The theme for 2026 is based on UNCRC Article 30: 𝘊𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘯 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘢𝘨𝘦, 𝘤𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘪𝘰𝘯.

Libraries are a safe place where children and families can engage and learn. We love seeing children come for Rock and Rhyme, find joy in books and be part of our children focused activities.

Did you know a child can have a library membership from the day they're born? With a membership they can access:

🌏 LOTE4Kids – a digital collection of over 4,500 picture books (eBooks and audiobooks) in 70+ languages.

📚 Little Explorers book packs – packs contain five books on an early learning topic for children aged 4–8 years.

💬 VOX Books – read a picture book and listen at the same time. Each print book is fitted with a special reader on the inside cover that plays a read-a-long.

Lilydale Library is now open!

The new, easy-to-access location on Main Road near the Memorial Hall offers more room, better facilities and more ways for people of all ages to read, learn, meet and connect.

Visit the library, become a member for free, browse the collection and use the facilities. Members have access to a larger collection, public computers, printers, an after-hours returns chute, a children’s reading area and a meeting space.

Lilydale Library is open:
Tuesday 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm
Friday 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm
Saturday 10:00 am – 1:00 pm

Open Library Access is coming soon! When it becomes available, access Lilydale Library from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm seven days a week, outside staffed hours. Talk to library staff for more information.

Libraries Tasmania thanks Lilydale District School for its support. The new library provides a welcoming local space for children, young people, families and the wider school community.

Libraries Tasmania acknowledges the support of Online Access Centre management and staff for their valuable assistance with the transition and service to the community over many years. The new library space supports improved access to technology, digital resources and library services for the local community.

Let’s get digital during Get Online Week! 🧑‍💻

Get Online Week is Good Things’ national campaign supporting people to be more confident and feel safer online.

Between 19 to 25 October, find free support to help get you online at Libraries Tasmania.

Library staff and digital mentor volunteers can help you set up and use a device, stay safe online and explore online services.

Digital mentor volunteers are available:
Launceston Library: Mondays 10:00 am – 12:00 pm; Fridays and Saturdays 11:30 am – 2:00 pm
Longford Library: Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
Campbell Town Library: Thursdays 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

You can also access Wi-Fi and use public computers, all for free.

Live at the Library: Phil Pitcher and Ellie Baker

This Saturday, 17 October from 10:30 am at Launceston Library.

National Carers Week started on Sunday 11 October. It's a time to recognise, celebrate and raise awareness of the more than 3 million Australians who provide unpaid care to a family member or friend.

Did you know that carers are able to access the Home Library Service? If you don't have time to make it to the library while providing daily care, volunteer couriers can deliver library books, DVDs and more to you.

To mark Players centenary, Launceston Library is delighted to host a special Launceston Players 100 Years Exhibition! ❤️🎭

The exhibition celebrates a century of productions, performers, costumes, memories and the many people who have helped bring theatre to life since 1926.

If you’ve ever performed, worked backstage, helped with a production, sat in our audiences, or simply love local theatre and Launceston history - come along and take a look.

The Exhibition is open on level 1 until 13 November 2026.

This week is Anti-Poverty Week (Sunday 11 October – Saturday 17 October), with the aim of helping Australians understand poverty and take action collectively to end it.

Signing up for a library membership is free and gives you access to lots of free resources including books, movies, video games, magazines and our online eLibrary.

Use your library membership to check out these titles on poverty to help grow your understanding of the topic:

📚 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘺 𝘍𝘪𝘹: 𝘸𝘩𝘺 𝘱𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘺 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦 𝘪𝘵 by Keetie Roelen (non-fiction) – exposes the realities of poverty and reveals why policies don't work. It is a radical rethink of current efforts to tackle poverty, what it means and how we break the cycle.

📚 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘚𝘩𝘰𝘦𝘴 by Tom Percival (junior fiction) – Will has the wrong shoes, he's always known it but doesn't know how to change it. Navigating the difficulties of home and school when you feel you stick out is tough, but finding confidence with the help and empathy of friends can be all you need to see the way.

📚 𝘈 𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘥 𝘚𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘰𝘯 by Matthew Hooper (adult fiction) – set between the wars in the foothills of Mount Kosciusko, this is a story of fourteen-year-old Beth. Beth’s brother and father have gone missing in a freak winter storm. Tensions flare in this novel that captures rural poverty and human capacity with true soul.
